It's hideous, honestly. There is no 'American' language. Here in America, we speak english. It looks like a kree8yff form of Davie (as in the nickname for David) to me. And the dah-vay prn is going to always be mispronounced.

I think she meant that it was American in origin, which really isn't something to be proud of. Yes, baby books make up meanings, but assuming it is some horrible off shoot of David, at least this time, they got the meaning correct. You're certainly right about how incredibly hideous this "name" is.
