Miriam and Andy were pleased to learn that she was pregnant again, even though they were in a very difficult position financially. Miriam's brother very generously (they thought) lent them some money to help them cover the cost of preparing for the new baby. However, when Miriam was 8 months pregnant she discovered that her brother had stolen that money from one of the local gangsters, who had put a hit out on both of them. The Powells had already spent the money and were unable to get it back. Andy wanted to make contact with the gangster, but Miriam thought that doing that would make things worse, if not for her, then for her brother. In the end, they fled and moved to a relative's house on the other side of the country until Ted was born. They then moved to a small town nearby.
