[Opinions] Dolores?
I'm really digging Dolores lately. I don't mind the meaning too much, but the problem is finding mns to go with such a distinctive fn.So, WDYT? Opinions are always welcome. Combos are even more so, even if you don't like the name at all. Thanks!

I don't like this name AT ALL. It is so "old lady" sounding.

It's nice-sounding enough, but I can't get past the meaning. Who would want to name a child "sorrows"?

I never particularly liked it because of the meaning and I tend to associate it with the word dolor in Spanish meaning pain (it also means sorrow, the plural is Dolores).

I love it.And the meaning doesn't bother me, either. Honestly, it appeals to me, in a way, because of the associations it has within my religion. When I think of Mary of Sorrows, I have this image of immense strength despite hardship. That's something beautiful and powerful and worth treasuring, not something to be discounted easily.Besides that, what the name means for me is something beyond the etymology. I hear it and I think of lyrics from "Slip Sliding Away" by Paul Simon: Dolores, I live in fear--my love for you is so overpowering, I'm afraid I'll disappear. There's something to be said for a woman who inspires that. ;) Some combos--any you like?Dolores Julie
Dolores Georgette
Dolores Quinn
Dolores Regina
Dolores Clare / Dolores Clair / Dolores Claire
Dolores Petra
Dolores June
Dolores Frieda
Dolores Tamar
Dolores Ruth
Dolores Fern
Dolores Janine
Dolores Claudette
Dolores Giselle

I never thought of it that way, that's an interesting perspective. The Italian variant of the name is Addolorata, which is even more direct since it translates as "sorrowed" or "dolorous", an obvious name to cause a "who-would-want-to-name-a-child-that" reaction which has, unsurpisingly, totally fallen out of use.

I like:
Dolores Quinn
Dolores Regina
Dolores Fern
Dolores Janine
Dolores Marian
Dolores Clara
Dolores Lucille -Love this
Dolores Ellen
Dolores Marguerite -A little Hispanic, but I love it. (nothing wrong with that, but maybe a little much for a Caucasian such as myself or future children to handle)
Dolores Adele
Dolores Kathleen
Dolores Cecile -I had this thought as well. My first thought was actually Emile, but it's a boys name, so didn't fly. Cecile has sort of a similar sound.I'm glad someone else likes it! Thanks!

I'm really growing to like Dolores also. I think its strong and feminine but not ultra feminine like some of the "ella" names are. Also probably doesn't hurt that my grandma's name is Deloris (though I don't like it spelled that way.) Her middle name is Eileen which I think seems to go nicely with it. Again, probably just being biased though. When she was much younger, her brothers and sisters (all 13 of them) called her Dora Jane. I don't know where that came from though. LOL.

I really don't like this name, but it's because of bad associations. I used to be friends with a girl named Delores and she used to steal stuff from me and she lied a lot.Anyways, I'll suggest some combos:
Dolores Diane (that's my ex-friend's name)
Dolores Jacqueline
Dolores Josephine
Dolores Patricia
Dolores Breanne
Dolores Elise
Dolores Gabrielle
Dolores LenaLike any?

Hm, I don't mind it, (and the nickname Lola is cute!) but it depends on the direction you want to go in with it.Dolores Rose
Dolores Mary
Dolores Catherine
are all more traditional names.Dolores Armida
Dolores Carmela
Dolores Estrella
are more Spanish sounding. You could even go more bohemian with it.
Dolores Orinthia
Dolores Amity
Dolores Philadelphia
(Hey, I had a class with a Philadelphia - it's kinda quirky/cute for a hippie name).

Yes, the Harry Potter association isn't a good one, but I always think of Dolores del Rio instead when I see this name. Can't really think of any mns to go with it though. Dolores Faith? I liked Dolores Eve.

I dislike it. Half the cleaning ladies I've ever had have had this name, so I can't get past the middle aged cleaning lady association.(Off the top of my head)
Dolores Amelia
Dolores Katherine
Dolores Lillian
Dolores Helena
Dolores Ingrid
Dolores Jeanine
Dolores Karina
Dolores Octavia
Dolores Rosalind
Dolores Andrea
Dolores ClarissaMost names seem to sound good with Dolores. I'd stay away from monotonous and harsher names (ie Rose, Tara, Elizabeth)

It is my aunt's name, and I have a cousin, her daughter, called Dolly after her. It is also my mother's MN for her. My mother is Aurelia Mary Dolores.Personally, I dislike it immensely. I know you say that the meaning doesn't bother you, but I can't get past the association. When I pick names, I want them to reflect how I perceive my future children. I want sorrow no where near them. I just think of how as kids, we always ask what our names mean. I have no idea how I could explain away the meaning -- well, I thought it sounded pretty anyway? That wouldn't cut it if my mom tried to tell me that, so I wouldn't do it to my children. I don't necessarily pick a name for a positive meaning, though it helps, but if I have a negative association I can't shake, then I wouldn't use it. Not many people actually know the meaning, though, but I would be concerned for when SHE asks.Dolores Mary or Dolores Aurelia spring to mind for obvious reasons. Other possibilities:
Dolores Camille
Dolores Cecilia
Dolores Sophia
Dolores Tamsin
Dolores Olivia
Dolores Amelia

I really hate this name.I'm not sure why, but I do.It is difficult to get a middle name for Dolores, though. Hmm.Wdyt of:
Dolores Yvette
Dolores Jean
Dolores JaneWow, I'll have to come back to this. The only one that really goes for me is Dolores Yvette. This is really difficult. Dolores Katharine? Dolores Ivy?

The Harry Potter association is too strong for me: I hate Dolores! Jane is her mn, too. Although I admit, it sounds good. Just had to point that out. I like your suggestion of Dolores Ivy. How about:Dolores Eve
Dolores June
Dolores Niamh
Dolores Elise
Dolores Eloise Penelope Try double mns or one syllable mns.

Oh gosh, I never read Harry Potter. Shoot. Is there some sort of really horrid character? Dolores Eve is nice, and I like Siri's suggestion of Dolores Ivy as well. Thanks you guys!

Oh yah.Dolores Umbridge. Might want to google her, but she didn't come to mind when I heard the name - mainly because it's rather common unlike Hermione or Albus.
