I think Ellie can stand on its own, but it does better as a nn witha more grown-up name to fall back on. Also, Ellie is extremely trendy right now as a full name and a nn, so a more formal name will probably be appreicated.
My favorite ell name is Ellen. I would really like to meet a little Ellen, it would make a nice change from all the Elizabeths and Ellas and Eleanors.

Also, you might consider Elena or Elaine, though their e's are long e's rather than short.
