i think it might be to do with accents. in he UK we would prononce it TAHR-a but in the US its more like TEH-ra or TAIR-a.
i don't like it at all personally. but that's just my opinion!

I agree with the poster who said that it's tacky. Years ago my older sister had a horse that she named Tara, so that's all I can think of.

To tell the truth, I find it somewhat tacky, also because of the Gone with the Wind association.

I pronounce it TAIR-uh, but I find it easy to use TAR-uh if the Tara in question prefers that pronunciation. Where I live, I think TAIR-uhs are the norm, and TAR-uhs are few and far between.

I like the name, but it doesn't exactly excite me. Tara feels somewhat dated, imo. I grew up with so many Taras; it's hard for me to separate it from the rest of the Jennifer/Lisa/Michelle/Kelly generation.

I pronounce it TARE-uh, and I really don't like it. Which is werid because I like Sarah. I think it's because I've disliked nearly everyone I've ever met with that name.

Considering Tara is on of my best friends names, I am a bit biased. She poronounces it Tair-un (and had to train me not to prn it Tar-ah). I don't like it prn tah-ruh though.

I really dislike how it's 'a rat' backwards.

I'm really conscious of the fact that you (probably) pronounce it differently to me. I say TAR-a, and to me all I hear is the Tar sound, which in turn makes me think of the black stuff on roads :( Therefore, I find it incredibly ugly. The other prn. sounds so stilted in my accent, so I could never bring myself to like this name.

I pronounce it Tar-Rah. I don't really like the name to be honest. I think it would be better as a nickname for something, not sure what though.

In the UK it is always pronounced Tah-ra to rhyme with Cara, Kara, Lara, Zara (and sometimes Sara) etc. It really bugs me that some people pronounce it Tair-a! It should be like the word "tar" with and "a" on the end.

Anyway, I do like it. I know some people in Britain will think of Tara Palmer-Tomkinson (posh socialite who's always in magazines, on tv etc) but she doesn't put me off the name. I like the sound and I think it's quite sophisticated and arty without being too frilly or eccentric. I've been thinking recently of adding it to my PNL.

Edited to add: It's not very popular in Britain (but not completely unheard of). I don't think I've ever known anyone called Tara. I meant to add this to message when I wrote it.

I knew a Tara (Tair-uh), and thought the name was kind of cool at first. Then over the few months we worked together, I really began to dislike her personality. I, of course, think of her.

Not completely unpleasant, but enough for me not want to use it. Okay for someone else.

I love Tara, I pronounce it Tah-rah. My only problem with the name is that I knew a Tara who was a totally beige personality, (my brother in law's ex girlfriend), in the year they were together, there wasn't a glimmer of personality... Really unfortunate I thought, because her name was so lovely!
