how would you pronounce it?
i've heard both lee-oh-NY-das and lee-ON-ih-das. i can't decide which i prefer!

I say lee-oh-NEE-das. Then again, I can see how some English speakers would use the long 'i' pronunciation. I don't care for it much.

I pronounce it le-aw-NEE-dahs.

To me, lee-ON-i-das has a strong "English" feel in it - like, people who speak English pronounce Andromeda ahn-DRAW-may-da, Angelica an-JE-li-kah and Veronica ve-OH-ni-kah instead of more habital ahn-drah-MYE-ah, ahn-je-LEE-kah and vye-rah-NEE-kah.

I've always said and heard it said lee-ON-i-das. 300 remains the only instance I've come across of the other pronunciation. (I'm British, btw.)

My grandsons name is Leonidas and we pronounce it lee-oh-NY-das. He goes by Leo, actually, and its more logical to get the nickname Leo from it with that pronunciation. I prefer the lee-oh-NY-das pronunciation.

lee-oh-NYE-das is what I prefer, though the last syllable is more of a "dis" sound in my accent.

I learned recently that Lon Chaney's given name was Leonidas. Isn't that cool? Makes me want any Leonidases out there to also go by Lon, hehe. :D

Yes, my daughter pointed out to me that Lon Chaneys real name was Leonidas. I looked it up, and discovered that it was the real name of Lon Chaney Sr., the father of Lon Chaney Jr., whom we all associate with Dracula. Still an interesting fact, though. Lon Jr. decided to go by that name when he started his film career, but his actual given name was Creighton.

Leh-oh-nee-das or Lee-oh-nee-das. I don't like the Lee-oh-NY-das pronounciation at all.
