[Opinions] Initial Nicknames on girls
I've always loved initial nicknames (CJ, TJ, etc.) on girls. It stems from my family calling me "JJ," I'm pretty sure... It's not my nickname, but my brother calls me JJ pretty consistently (though others only use it sparingly). I love it when a girl has a initial nickname and a very girly name behind it.I've always planned on Molly June (or Mollie June) with the nickname "MJ", but I've been tossing around other options lately. "TJ," "DJ" and "EJ" all sound good, too! I'm having trouble coming up with other ones, though (that don't involves a J!). And, unfortunately, the only J names I like for girls are June, Juniper, Joanna, and Jane. Leaving me with very few options. So, how do people feel about initial nicknames, for girls? Which do you like best? And, could you guys come up with some combo's for me?D names: Daisy, Delfina, Delia, Delilah, Della, Delphina, Delphine, Diana
E names: Eleanor, Elisabeth, Elizabeth, Eliza, Ella, Ellen, Emilia, Emma, Emmeline, Estelle, Eve
M names: Madeleine, Madeline, Mae, Maeve, Magnolia, Mara, Margaret, Maria, Matilda, Maura, May, Meredith, Miranda, Mollie, Molly
T names: Talia, Tara, Thalia, Thea, Theodora, Tira
J names: Jane, Joanna, June, JuniperThanks oodles!ETA - RJ? And, is the whole idea too trendy? Opinions, please! :)

Aside from PJ, the only initial nicknames I like are ones that "sound out" a real name/nickname...e.g. EV (Evie), ED (Edie), KT (Katie), KC (Casey), ME (Emmy), LC (Elsie), IV (Ivy), SE (Essie). But even then, I only like them as occasional family nicknames.

I'm not a huge fan of this "trend", it seems like more of an American thing to me. Here in Australia we don't really do this. We prefer to put an "o" or a "y" on the end of names. By that I mean John "Johno", Robert "Robbo", Scott "Scotty", James "Jimmy", Andrew "Andy" or "Ando", things like that. Anyway back to your question, so here are some combos I think work:Daisy Jane
Delia Jane
Della Jane
Diana JaneElizabeth Jane
Eliza Jane
Ella Jane
Emma Jane
Emmeline Joanna
Estelle Joanna
Eve JoannaMadeleine Joanna
Mae Joanna
Maeve Joanna
Magnolia Jane
Margaret Joanna
Matilda Jane
Miranda Jane
Molly JaneTalia Jane
Tara Jane

I really like Mollie Jane or Mollie June. I love MJ!I also like Daisy Jane a LOT!There is a Woody Allen movie called "Everyone Says I Love You" in which the main character is a young woman named Djuna (pronounced JOON-uh, after 1920s novelist Djuna Barnes) but goes by DJ.I don't think the idea is trendy at all. I wouldn't use it because I like girly names for girls, but I think it's fresh and unusual.M.

I've never personally been fond of initial nicknames for either boys or girls, but there's nothing wrong with them. If you really like it, go for it! I'd just be careful about which initials you put together if you want to use them as a nn. For example, say you wanted a T middle name. DT is awkward, ET is extra terrestrial, MT is "empty," TT is too cutesy, so that leaves you with JT (using only letters from your list). Also, with D first names, DT was already discussed, DM is dungeon master, DE is said dee-ee and is a bit stuttery, and DJ is, well, a DJ (though DJ might not be bad initials). I suppose DD is a little cutesy, but acceptable. I'm not going to do all the letter combinations, but I think you get the idea...As a random thought, it might be that J's work so well because they are a distinct sound. Words often start or end with sounds like "ee", "dee," "tee," and "em," so initial nicknames can start sounding like words.Um, so some letter combos I like are: EJ, EM, MJ, TJ, JT, and JD. A combo I like for each:
EJ: Eleanor June
EM: Elisabeth Maeve
MJ: Meredith Jane
TJ: Thalia Juniper
JT: June Theodora
JD: Joanna Delfine

Sorry to be so negative, but....
I absolutely loathe initial nicknames on girls (or anyone really). As a playful, once in a while kind of thing, it's not that bad. But to use initials in the place of a real name is just lazy and IMHO, ugly. It just screams "trailer-park" to me.
That said, I am all for making sure initials don't spell anything bad, and making sure they sound good together.
It seems such a waste to have a beautiful feminine name, and then go by something as impersonal as two letters.
Like I said before, sorry to be negative, but that's my opinion. =o)

There are plenty of options that don't end in J, you know! I go by AR a lot of the time with my friends, and I rather like it. I think initial nicknames are fine in general, especially in casual use.I think the following all sound nice enough (as long as you don't have awkward glottal stops in them, like in EE, I'm cool): TR, JT, JD, EK, QZ, EC, TG, AG, KN, OG, TK...Some combo ideas from the names you've listed:Tara Jane "TJ"
Molly Ellen "ME"
May Ellen "ME"
Tira Delphine "TD"
Ella Daisy "ED"
Juniper Della "JD"
Joanna Dorothy "JD"Array

Ooh, I like TR, JT, TK, and especially ME (sounds like Emmy, sorta). And KC could be an option, but then I don't know if I like "Casey" soo... But, then that opens up a whole list of ones ending in C. Yay!Haha, the only one I would really stay away from is ED.But, thanks for the suggestions! I like it a a casual nickname, and those will help a lot.. Now I can basically do it with any combo! =P
