[Surname] Laitinen (Finnish)
Replies
My guess would have been that the surname Laitinen comes from Finnish laita, 'edge', but the book Sukunimet tells me that Laitinen has its roots in a Germanic given name. This name had the forms Laitha, Laitu, Lethu, Ledi and Leda in Old High German, and Ledhe and Lete in Old Swedish.
Great, thank you, Kevlar!
Now I have to find out what the names Laitha, Laitu, Lethu, Ledi, Leda, Ledhe and Lete mean ...
I will take this to the first name board.
Thank you for your help!

The original Germanic name is Laiti as you can see at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Laitinen-name-meaning.ashx but its meaning is unknown.
