Have you considered Bat as a nn for Bartholomew? Tolly and Barth could work too. Even Tom, though that would be a major stretch and everyone you met would think the kid's name was Thomas.
I like Alzbeta. It's an interesting take on Elizabeth.

I do like Bartholomew quite a bit, but not enough to be absolutely in love with it. Apart from Constantine, it was one of the first names that I really began liking. I'm not super crazy about it anymore, but it's still nice. On the otherhand, I love Alzbeta! Elizabeth has just always been so blah to me, so I found for Alzbeta about a year ago and just can't get over it. It's so spunky and amazing! And I agree that Elizabeth Blackwell was just amazing. I don't think I can really help you out with any nicknames for Bartholomew, though. Theo? No, that doesn't work. Oh well.

The name Alžbeta is considered an old-fashioned, old-lady's name in Slovakia these days. It definitely isn't one of those popular names now, though I heard some parents calling their small daughter this in a store not long ago. All Alžbetas are quite old here, about 50 years old and more.. I think it's a pretty name, but rather difficult to pronounce. Every Alžbeta I've ever met went by Beta or Betka, nobody would call them Alžbeta, people think it's too formal. Btw, right now a movie called Bathory is going to the cinemas in Slovakia. It's about a famous medieval countess Alžbeta Báthoryová, who lived at Cachtice Castle in the 16th century and tortured and killed hundreds of girls (true story).

Alžbeta is also beautiful and noble :-). Nickname: Al, Ally, Alka, Betty, Bětka ("Byet-kah").

I like Bartholomew on its own as the name for a pet but not for a person. I chalk it up to Dr. Seuss and The Neverending Story (different names, same feel). It is hard to think of some other nn's but the only feasible one I can think of is Art. The rest are too out of the way.
I liked Alzbeta at one point until I started saying it out loud over and over. Now all I can think of is "All better" but in a slangy way.
