To be honest, I really dislike this name. It's one of my least-liked old, established, classic names ever, along with David. I associate it with nerdiness, because I knew an extremely geeky, nerdy Steven, and two other Stevens who were borderline nerdy and geeky. Even without that association, however, I think I would dislike it, just based upon the way it sounds.
But of the two spellings, I much prefer Stephen. Here in the U.S., it seems Steven is much more common.
Edited to add: I just thought of another very geeky, nerdy Steven I knew in high school, just as bad as the first Steven I mentioned. Make that two very nerdy Stevens and two borderline Stevens. No wonder I can't get the nerd image out of my head.

I love Stephen but can't stand Steven. Steven lends itself to the nn Steve, which is one of my least favorite names ever. Stephen is great, though. I have a friend named Stephen and he's one of the coolest kids I know, so the association with it is very positive.

. . . Steven is the name of my only full sibling (2.5 years younger than me), and it is also the name of the love of my life. My brother is Steven John, and my boyfriend is Steven Phillip (they both have surnames starting with W, too, lol).
I can't stand Stephen - it looks like it should be pronounced STEE-fen rather than STEE-ven. Blech.

I like Stephen, mainly because I don't like Vs in names. It makes them too harsh, IMO. I don't pronounce those two names the same, however, because I have a character who spells his name Stephen and pronounces it STEF-en, not STEEV-en. But I like Stephen better.

All I see is STEF-en. Looking at it I *want* to say STEF-en, but more than half of the time Stephens are actually STEE-vens. I can't get my mind around Stephen King's name even though I know it's STEE-ven. I always end up correcting myself halfway through the name (STEF-en Kiiiii--STEEEVEN KING! STEEEVEN KING!)... it's quite embarassing sometimes. I have a similar problem with grammar. If someone writes "they're turn to play", I'll read it as "they are turntoplay" and it'll screw me up royally. It takes me a while to go back and fix it in my head. I read too literally.
It's so horribly confusing for me. Aside from that, I don't like the names aesthetically, and I dislike the way both pronunciations sound.

I prefer Stephen being that it is really the established biblical spelling.

I also don't like it. Even though it's a classic it seems outdated. Kind of like Stephanie or Susan (even though I think Susan will come back soon). I think the name Stephen/Steven needs a break. For about 20 more years (during that time it should decrease in popularity) until it can be revived again. At the moment it just seems outdated, old and kind of boring. Very boring actually.
I associate it with uhm...nothing. It is just so popular that I can't even imagine what a Stephen would look like. A Stephen could be anyone. Which is kind of sad. A bit like John or Jennifer.
I absolutely dislike Steven, though. I can stand Stephen but not Steven. And I hate the nn's Steve and Stevie.

I love the name Stephen/Steven. I don't know which one I like better. The name reminds me of the character from that 70s show

I've known a lot of good people with this name, so that probably affects my opinion. Actually, never mind, I know an extremely obnoxious one right now. However, despite that, this I still love this name.
I also prefer Stephen, merely because it's less popular and reminds me of Dr. Maturin in Master and Commander :)
