What do you think of Edelweiss as a name for a girl?

It follows the flower trend. Reminds me of a song from The Sound of Music. NMS, but why not.

I've always loved the way Edelweiss sounds ever since seeing "The Sound of Music."
My cousin is named Edel and I asked her if that is where her name came from. We were born in the 60's. (It wasn't the origin.)
Edelweiss would make a great mn, but I wouldn't use it as a fn. It's a little too whimsical for that.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... sorry but I'm German and it just sounds ridiculous. If you're interested, "edel" is the German word for "noble" and "weiss" is the German word for "white". I mean you wouldn't name a child Noblewhite, would you ? It's as bad as naming a kid Snow White or something like that. It also makes me think of "The Sound of Music".

Was the Noblewhite seems a bit "white supremacist". At least to me it does. Though I honestly wouldn't have made the connection. I think it would make a lovely flower name.

I didn't even think of that. Even though now that you mention it that would also be a problem. It's just that naming a child Edelweiss in Germany would expose the child to constant teasing. It might work okay in the USA but in Germany you not only think of the flower but also of the two words and it's just weird. I mean I love "The Song of Music" and that song always makes me cry but it is just weird as a name. I think if someone would come up to me and say "Hi, I'm Edelweiss" I probably couldn't stop laughing for an hour and that would be a positive reaction. Most people would be like "oh come on, what's your REAL name" or they'd just stare at you as if you were insane.

Since you live in Greece I'll say you can get away with alot of names us American ladies can't. It's a flower that isn't used often.

I think it's a beautiful name! I love the song "Edelweiss" too. However, I have to say, I'm not sure if I would use as first name, maybe a middle name? I don't know. I'd love to see it on a little girl (o:
