[Opinions] Spelling and Pronunciation Survey
Just curious which spellings and pronunciations you prefer...I'll post mine later. When I ask you to list you favorite spellings you'll have to write down at least 5. Write the ones you would actually use in capital letters (e.g. ASHLEY, ASHLEIGH, ASHLIE, Ashlee, Ashlea).1. List you favorite spellings of KATE-lynn. Your favorite spelling first then the second favorite etc. List at least 5. You can list as many as you want. If you pronounce Caitlin as KAHT-leen and not as KATE-lynn like I do include it but tell me that you pronounce it differently.2. Do you think that Khloe looks better than Chloe ? Does it look more authentic, in your opinion ? I had several people tell me that.3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.5. Do you prefer -ette or -et endings ? (e.g. Juliet/Juliette, Violet/Violette). Are there some exceptions (e.g. you usually dislike -ette endings but Juliette is fine etc) ? How about -bel/-belle endings ?6. Do you pronounce -line as "leen", "lynn" or "line" ? Are there some exceptions (e.g. Caroline is "line" but Emmeline is "leen" ?)...how do you pronounce Emmeline, Rosaline, Evangeline, Caroline. Also "lina" endings. Is Carolina pr. Caro-leena or Caro-lina etc ?7. If you had to use an alternate spelling of your favorite boy/girl names which one would you choose ?8. How would you spell Kaia ? Kaya, Kaia, Kya etc ? How would you spell Maya ?9. May, Mei or Mae ? Why ?10. Are there any names you pronounce differently from anybody else ? Are there any names where you actually prefer to use an alternate spelling ? Is there any really creative spelling you like ?thx

1. Caitlín (it's pronounced 'KOIT-lin').2. No. It may be more correct, but it sure doesn't look like it.3. Michaela.4. Hayley, Hailey.5. '-et' and '-bel'.6. Depends on the name.
Evangeline, Emmeline = LEEN
Caroline, Madeline, Rosaline = LINE'lina' is always 'leena', as in Carolina.7. I can't really misspell Juno or Rune successfully! Joono and Roon look stupid.8. Kaia and Maia, assuming they are pronounced 'KY-ah' and 'MY-ah'.9. May. Because it is spelled correctly.10. Only Aerin that I can think of that looks creative. That is only because it is literary, not just an alternate spelling of Erin.

Caitlin- Prn. KAHT-leen, the rest are KATE-lynn
Katelyn
Caitlyn
Katelynn
Kaitlin
2. Do you think that Khloe looks better than Chloe ? Does it look more authentic, in your opinion ? I had several people tell me that.
Chloe's more authentic. Khloe just looks tryndee.3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.
Michaela
Mikaela
Micaela
Mikayla
Makayla
4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.
Hayley
Hailey
Haley
Haylie
Hailie

I prefer -et and -bel, if there's an option. The other endings look like unneccesary ornamentation sometimes. There are a couple names I'm okay with, though, like Antoinette, Odette, and Rosette.

If you pronounce Caitlin as KAHT-leen and not as KATE-lynn like I do include it but tell me that you pronounce it differently.Caitlin, Kathleen counts, right?, Caitlynn, Caitlynne, Kaitlin.2. Do you think that Khloe looks better than Chloe ? Does it look more authentic, in your opinion ? I had several people tell me that.I think Chloe looks a lot better than Khloe. I think that the k sound is represented by the h right next to the c, so Khloe for me is a bit redundant. 3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.I refuse to pronounce it Mi-kay-la. It's always Mee-ka-ay-la for me. Mikaela, Michaela, Micaela, Michella, Michel, technically. 4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.Ugh. Hayley, Hayleigh, Haylie, Haylee, Hay-lo (kidding, I think).5. Do you prefer -ette or -et endings ? (e.g. Juliet/Juliette, Violet/Violette). Are there some exceptions (e.g. you usually dislike -ette endings but Juliette is fine etc) ? How about -bel/-belle endings ?I love both. The pronunciation changes, though. Violet is just Violet, but Violette is Vee-oh-lette. As far as -bel vs. -belle goes, less is more for me. 6. Caro-leena or Caro-lina etc ?It depends on how someone tells me to pronounce their name. Generally though, I go with the French pronunciation. Caroline is Care-o-leen, Emmeline is Emme-leen, Rosaline is Rose-sa-leen, Evangeline is Evanje-leen . . . "lina" endings go the same way with me. Lynn is "lin". That's the only line I draw, haha!7. If you had to use an alternate spelling of your favorite boy/girl names which one would you choose ?

1. List you favorite spellings of KATE-lynn.
~ Katelyn, Kaitlin, Caitlin, Caitlyn, Kaitlyn2. Do you think that Khloe looks better than Chloe ? Does it look more authentic, in your opinion ? I had several people tell me that.
~ No, it looks like a learned attempt to be closer to the original Greek letters – but only in an Oxford dictionary. On a person it would be pointless “creativity”, imo. “Kh” is not a natural formation in English; it looks completely off.3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.
~ The only one used around these parts (and not often) is Michaela. I would like Michaela pronounced Mi-Kyle-uh, if that’s relevant, but no one would get it right. The only other spellings I can think of are Makayla, Mikayla and McKayla, which only totals 4, but that’s the order I’d put them in.4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.
~ HAILEY, HAYLEY, HALEY, Haylie, Haylee5. Do you prefer -ette or -et endings ? (e.g. Juliet/Juliette, Violet/Violette). Are there some exceptions (e.g. you usually dislike -ette endings but Juliette is fine etc) ? How about -bel/-belle endings ?
~ It depends on the names, but generally –ette and –elle. I like Juliet over Juliette, but I pronounce them differently. I also pronounced Violet and Violette differently. But Annabel and Annabelle are pr’d the same, and I prefer Annabelle as a first name, Annabel as a middle name.6. Caro-leena or Caro-lina etc ?
~ Oh, there’s no rule to this, it depends entirely on the name. Caroline is “line”, no question (unless I were talking about somebody French); Madeline is also “line”, and so is Rosaline because that’s how our English teacher used to pronounce it. When I say Evangeline, I automatically say “leen” but that’s odd because “leen” is the way I like it least. I prefer Carolina pronounced like the states, but all the people I have come across have used –leena so that’s how I’d say it.

I don't think it looks particularly authentic, it just looks awful to me3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.
MICHAELA, sorry I'm done... the rest just make me cringe
4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.
HAYLEY by far, Haylee, Haley, Hayleigh, Haylie5. Do you prefer -ette or -et endings ? (e.g. Juliet/Juliette, Violet/Violette). Are there some exceptions (e.g. you usually dislike -ette endings but Juliette is fine etc) ? How about -bel/-belle endings ?
defintely depends on the name, love both Juliet and Juliette, only like Violet. Usually prefer Belle over Bel6. Again depends on the name, either Line or Leen. Emmeline = leen ending, Rosaline = line ending, Evangeline = leen ending, Caroline = line ending. With lina endings, it really depends7. If you had to use an alternate spelling of your favorite boy/girl names which one would you choose ?

1 - Caitlin, Caitlyn, Catlin (KAHT), Kaetlin, Kaitlin, Kaitlin2 - I prefer Chloë to either Khloe or Chloe. 3 - As far as I am concerned, there is only one acceptable spelling of "Michaela", and that is M-I-C-H-A-E-L-A. 4 - Hayley, Hailey, Haylie, Hailee, Haylee5 - I pronounce Juliet differently from Juliette, and the difference is even more obvious between Violet and Violette. It changes the emphasis (JOOL-ee-et vs. joo-lee-ET; VY-oh-lit vs. vy-oh-LET). I generally prefer -ette to -et. I prefer -bel to -belle in most circumstances.6 - Usually "line", not "lean". CAHR-oh-line, EHM-ah-line (nonstandard), ROZ-ah-line, ehv-AN-jel-een. Carolina is cah-ro-LY-na but Rosalina is roe-za-LEE-na.7 - I only have one true "favourite" name ATM, and it is Korë - which would probably be looked on as an "alternate spelling" of Cory etc. anyway. I'm generally not fond of alternate spellings. 8 - Kaya, Maya.9 - Mae. I'm not sure why, but this has always been my favourite spelling.10 - There's the aforementioned nonstandard pronunciation of Emmeline, and my insistence that Madeleine is only to be pronounced "mah-deh-LEHN" and never "MAHD-uh-line", but otherwise, no, not usually. I'm not a big fan of creative spellings, in general, but I do admit to liking "Kaeleigh" more than I should.

CAITLIN, Kaitlin, Caitlyn, Kaitlyn, Katelyn. Not actually favourite spellings at all, just ones I can think of. Don't like Caitlin much anyway.2. Do you think that Khloe looks better than Chloe ? Does it look more authentic, in your opinion ? I had several people tell me that.
Chloe is way better. Khloe doesn't look more authentic; if you're going for the Greek thing, leave out the 'h' and just do Kloe. (which still looks really odd to me, and I don't think is even Greek)3. List you favorite spellings of Michaela. At least 5. If you pronounce some differently (e.g. Mikaela as MEE-ka-ay-la) let me know.
MICHALA (my favourite by far, I pronounce it as mi-KA-la though. I don't like mi-KAY-la), MICHAELA, Micaela, Mikaela, Mikayla (IMO the last three are pretty awful though, not favourites, just spellings I could think of. I especially hate Mikayla).4. List you favorite spellings of Hayley. Also at least 5.
HAILLE, Halley (like Halley's comet), Hayley, (first three are only 'good' ones IMO, I don't like the name anyway) Haylee, Halee, Haighleigh, Heighleigh, Hayleigh, Haleigh, Haileigh, Hailee, Heighlee, etc etc. Can't think of anymore just now.

1. KATELYN, Katelynn, Caitlyn, Kaitlyn, Caitlynn, Kaitlynn (I wouldn't actually be likely to use this name 'cause it's overdone and I like Kathleen better anyway)2. Khloe looks like a dumb made up spelling that somebody did to be cute, but the h just doesn't belong after the k in that context and it looks awkward and people would spell it wrong a lot of the time.3. Again, I prefer Miguela- or even Mihaela- and find Michaela way over done the past decade or so... However, for spellings I'd go with MICHAELA, MIKAYLA, MYKAYLA, Micaela, Micayla, Mycaela... and those last ones are really stretching it to get the 5+ you wanted of each. The other spellings out there are kind of dumb.4. HAYLEIGH, HAYLEY, HAILEY, HEILI (just so kanji could go with it 平里), Haley, Haleigh, Haileigh, Haylie, Haylee, Hailee, Halee... Again, overdone in recent years, but not as much as some others.5. ette for sure in most cases... et makes it feel like something's missing... if you're going to go the Fr. direction and use ette, you may as well do it properly. However, in the Violet case, the word itself is simple Violet and adding the extra letters just lookds dumb because they don't belong there. Juliet could go either way, but looks nicer with the double t.6. "line" is a case by case ending that can go one way or another depending on the name and the language of the person using it... Normally, to me, Caroline would be "line", but I met a Karoline from Germany whose pronunciation was "lean"... and that concept applies to those with "ine" names not starting with l as well. for example, Jasmine depends on the individual Jasmine whether it's "in" or "een"
