[Opinions] Dakota
I kind of like Dakota on a boy. I don't mind it on a girl but I think on a boy it would be handsome, with the nn Cody. I also like it for a male horse for some reason. I once met a horse named Dakota and he was the cutest. I'd call him Cody as well.
1. Do you like the name Dakota? Do you prefer it on a boy or a girl?
2. Do you think it's popular? I think it has a trendy feel to it but I hardly met any Dakotas. Just three girls, two boys and a male horse so far. Do you know any Dakotas? How old are they and are they male or female? Do you know any middle names? Do they go by Cody or by another nn (Kota) etc?
3. Do you think its popularity will rise or fall?
4. Do you think it's disrespectful to name a child Dakota? A woman was having a fit about that on another message board. She said it was disrespectful to Native American people and I heard a lot of people say that.
5. How do you like: Dakota Richard for a boy? and Dakota Emmeline or Dakota Rose for a girl? It's funny, now that I'm writing this....it seems really strange to pair Dakota up with Richard. It looks really feminine next to Richard and really masculine next to Emmeline but okay with Rose hmmmmmm

Just popped in my head on my way home from teaching an En. lesson. Dakota sounds strong next to it and the meaning is good.

Dakota is a really cool name! Might put it on my name list...
In answer to your questions...
>I like it for both a boy and a girl, but perhaps because of the 'a' ending I find it a little more feminine than masculine (though it's by no means an excessively girly name).
>I have never met any boys with this name, and only one girl. She is three years old, very talkative, and is my mother's friend's daughter.
I don't think the name is particularly popular, so therefore it isn't what I would call trendy.
>I do, however, think that its popularity will rise, as there are a few famous Dakotas around these days, i.e) child actresses Dakota Fanning and Dakota Blue Richards
>In what way disrespectful? I don't think it is at all. Lots of names have ancient greek origins, does that mean they're disrespectful to the ancient greeks?
>Dakota Emmeline is the best combo out of the ones you've listed. Dakota Richard makes me think of Dakota Blue Richards (a girl) who played Lyra in the Golden Compass, so it's a little weird hearing it on a boy in that context. In general though I like it for boys.
Also, not sure about Cody for a nickname. I can see how it could be used, but I'm not a huge fan of the name Cody anyway. When I see it written down it makes me think of cod-y (fishy!!!), and when it's spoken I hear code E.

1. Yes... I'd lean in the boy direction on that one... Good girls' names are easier to find than good boys' names.
2. It's around, but not excessively popular. I've heard other people refer to kids named Dakota, but not sure I've actually met one. The one in my mind right now is a girl. I think Dakota's best left as is without a nn and I wouldn't turn it into Cody... Kota's a little better, but the full names too nice to shorten.
3. Maybe.
4. No. I think it would depend on the people who chose the name... and rather than assuming the feelings of native Americans, it may be better to ask some of them... instead of white folk trying to force their assumptions on you one way or the other. After all, there are 2 states with Dakota in them and a large percentage of native Americans give English names to their children without any thought to it, so I don't think it's fair to assume they'd be offended if we used one or two of their names.
5. Dakota Richard's ok... I'd prefer Rose to Emmeline. Dakota Joel might also be nice.

Dakota is not my style at all, but I am not entirely averse to it anymore. I know one, a boy, and I do think it is masculine. I don't really like Richard unless it is in the right combo, and this isn't it. It definitely needs something decidedly masculine (in the traditional sense) with it, though.
Dakota John
Dakota Daniel (alliterative, but I like it)
Dakota Thomas (my favorite of this list)
Dakota Anthony
Dakota Robert

1- I like the name, but it's a GP for me. I have only known it on girls, so it's a girls name for me :P The most famous Dakota i remember is Dakota Culkin, who sadly passed away yesterday :( She was 29.
2- I don't think it's popular, but it's not that super rare either. '
3- I think the name will rise, but I don't think it will ever reach 'cult' status like Aiden :D
4- IMO, it's not disprespectful. I don't see how it would be. For that case no kid should be named America, Asia, India, Jesus, Moses etc etc etc...
5- I don't care for Richard. Both names are harsh sounding paired together. I like both of the girl combos you have.

1. I do not like the name Dakota on a boy or girl.
2. I don't think it's very popular just well known because of Dakota Fanning. I know of two male Dakota's. One goes by Kota the other, Dakota. One of the Dakota's middle names is Marshall.
3. I think it will stay where it's at in popularity.
4. No. It's just a name. That's like saying that naming your daughter London or Brooklyn is disrespectful to France and New york. People can name their children whatever they want.
5. I don't like Dakota Richard. I do think that Dakota looks awfully feminine next to it. I agree with you on Dakota Emmeline. It makes Dakota look very masculine, but I think it also looks masculine next to Rose.

ummm... London's in England.
1. Do you like the name Dakota? It's okay
Do you prefer it on a boy or a girl? Both
2. Do you think it's popular? Yes
Do you know any Dakotas? No
3. Do you think its popularity will rise or fall? Rise
4. Do you think it's disrespectful to name a child Dakota? No (not to be anyways) usually people use names [whatever they maybe] to honour not disrespect.
5. How do you like: Dakota Richard for a boy? and Dakota Emmeline or Dakota Rose for a girl? They are okay

Dakota isn't a personal favorite of mine. But I just read on a news sight where Macauley McCulkin's (sp?) sister Dakota was killed in a car accident. No arrests, just an awful, awful accident.
So I'm feeling generous right now to the name Dakota for a girl. I can't think of any combinations for it right now though, sorry.

Oh....how terrible :( yes his sister was Dakota Sioux. I didn't know she'd been in a car accident. I'm really sorry to hear that.
Macaulay is a rather cool name as well. The whole family has rather unusual names.
Macaulay Carson
Dakota Sioux
Kieran Kyle
Quinn Kay
Christian Patrick
Rory Hugh
Shane
the funny thing is that his dad also has a daughter named Jennifer. I read quite a bit about his family and career a while back....
again really sad to hear the news about Dakota...
