Hmm... if you don't know any Japanese then it's a good name, but personally I wouldn't want to name someone after a color :)
Even if you're practically fluent in Japanese, it's a good name... and if you don't like naming a kid after a colour, choose different kanji... like jade or something... one of the cool things about Jpns. names.
It's a pretty normal name here in Jpn... Some people are also named Aoi, which can mean blue.

I think Midori is pretty. My first association with the name was Midori Ito who I watched figure skate in the 1992 Olympics when I was a kid. That is still who I think of first.
Olympic silver medalist in Alverville, woman's figure skating, from Japan, Midori Ito. I like it.
its a pretty name but unfortunately also that of a (rather tasty) liquer
There's an alcoholic beverage called Midori liquor. Aside from that, I think of the green, green forest and other peaceful thoughts. It has a very nice sound to it...
There's also a star of some rather questionable movies that goes by Midori, and an author called Midori as well, so that balances it out a bit. Between the associations with X-rated actors, authors, liqueur, and trains, it's an odd jumble. But I think I'll go back to the forest, now.

I love it for either gender.
I wouldn't use it on a boy... It's definitely a girly name here.
It's pretty, but I think of the liqueur.
Melon Liquor.
Fine as a pet name, horrible on a baby.

Are you kidding?! It's ADORABLE on a baby... and not everyone has even heard of the liqueur... I never heard of it until a few weeks ago on this bulletin board and I've been hanging w/ Jpns. folk for years and live in the country. Maybe it depends where you live, but here it's a normal name that doesn't automatically make people think of booze.
