Maybe on principle I'd prefer Elsa, but in practical application I can't stand it. I think it's just dumpy and homely. It has what a friend of mine calls "thrift store mafia" essence all over it; it seems like it'd be a sort of smug, quasi-alternative option that would have been someone's alleged darling "before it was popular."

That's quite an analysis! I love the term "thrift store mafia"!!
However, since the poster says the name is meant to honor a friend, if I were the her I wouldn't worry about such judgments.

I had a friend named Elsa whose parents were (Christian) immigrants from India. It did seem a little bit quaint, but definitely cool. I guess the personality of the bearer makes the biggest impression.
