[Opinions] Re: Maia/Maya
in reply to a message by VickyBliss
I like it best spelt Maya. I say MY-a for both, but I like MAY-a too, (although I wouldn't get that prn from Maia, it only makes sense with Maya and Maja, IMO).
This is one of those names that I quite like, but tend to forget about. There's a character called Maia on a show I watch who I don't like most of the time, so I tend to go off the name every now and then lol. It's also quite popular in NZ at the moment (don't know about where you are) which sort of puts me off it a little.

I *think* that may-a is the correct "Roman" pronunication for Maia
and my-a for Maya. DOn't ask me why.

You learn something new every day!
I guess Maia makes more sense as 'my-a' to me because I speak a lot more Maori than I do 'Roman' (because I speak no 'Roman' lol), and the 'ai' vowel is always pronounced to rhyme with 'my'. Also, every Maia I've met is 'MY-a', so there's probably that influence too. And Maya looks like may + a, hence that assumption, I guess.

Yes, should be
as the correct pronunciation of Gaia is GAY-ah. At least my professor told me so. Still I'd pronounce it GAH-yah, should I use it.

You're right about Maia, at least according to "classical" Latin pronunciation. It being a dead language the pronunciation rules are a little arbitrary. MY-a would be spelled Maea though.
