[Opinions] A nickname question.
I find that I like Bartholomew, but not Bart. I also like Tom, but not Thomas. Would it be too much of a stretch for Tom to be a nn for Bartholomew, or is it ok?

I think it kind of is... because Tom sounds nothing like Bartholomew.
You can use any nickname you want, but I wouldn't use Bartholomew if the thought of Bart makes you physically ill...there is a good chance someone will call him Bart one day...maybe even your son will choose that he likes Bart better.
I think it works actually. Bartholomew has a "Tom" feel imo. I say go for it.
I don't see how Tom can be a nickname for Bartholomew, unless his middle name was Thomas. That's really stretching it.
It's a bit of a stretch but I suppose it would be fine. My granny's brother was named William "Skip", so I guess Bartholomew "Tom" wouldn't be too out there. I also know a guy named John Waldemar but he goes by Trey. For the longest time I was so confused as to why he went by Trey until he said he was John Waldemar III (being the the third John Waldemar he was "Trey", get it? lol). So I think people would eventually get the nickname Tom for Bartholomew.
Trey
I knew a kid whose name I knew to be Homer, but I played soccer with a kid who looked just like him who went by Trey. I always thought maybe they were identical twins and I just never saw them both at the same time. Until high school when I befriended him and discovered that his name was Homer Oliver (Surname) III, and his family called him Trey. :)

You can do whatever you like
Just be prepared for it to be a bit of a pain in the butt at times. I see this a little with non traditional/unintuitive nicknames. As long as you don't mind correcting, it's fine.

Yes, I think it could definitely work. I mean there are people out there who have nicknames that are completely unrelated to their actual names and that just developed out of inside jokes or whatever, and people still accept them as nicknames. I don't see it as a major problem. Sure, some people are going to assume he goes by Bart, but correcting them once should suffice.
You can use any NN you'd like for any name
Heh.
Personally I think it's a stretch. Theoretically I say nicknames can be whatever you want, but in reality I would have a difficult time swallowing that.
An overlooked possibility regarding Bartholomew: Tolly. Think on it!
It is good to see people liking Tom. I love Tom.

No, I think it's fine. Have you considered Tolly?
I'm on the fence about it, but it's not out of the running.
It would be a bit of a stretch, and some people might be like "Where the heck did they get 'Tom'?", but I think that it'll be fine.
Ditto.
Generally I avoid names that present these types of problems. I like enough other names so that I can be confident with those.
fail.
Right? Did I do it right? Like, replying 'fail' when the poster has neglected to answer the question?
(eta I mean this completely sans malice)

Yep, that sounds about right.
BTW, I think Bartholomew NN Tom would work. For me they're radically different colors, but if it works for you, I bet the kid would be able to pull it off.

Just curious,
what colors are they for you?
