William lived during the American Revolution, when he was a soldier. He was shot by an enemy, and was left on the battlefield to die. An older vampire who had just finished hunting, saw William and decided to instead of killing him, spare his life and turn him into a vampire. William and his friend/creator Alexander, continued to hunt and travel together for the next 350 years. They were hunting deep into the woods when William spotted Kristen. She looked to have fought a bear. She look as though she was about to die. William fell in love with her right then and turned her into his vampire wife. From then on, William and Kristen were "veggitarian" vampires.
