I prefer it spelled Maren and used for a girl.

And you can't spell it Maren in Croatian because we pronounce every letter just like it's written.

Marin is actually a male name used in Croatia and Romania. A lot of people spell Maren wrong, but if your daughter ever comes to Croatia or Romania, she will be teased because of her name! So DON'T call her Marin, use Maren!

I think I like it. It doesn't seem very gender-specific to me, probably because of Maren, but it's nice on a boy.
