[Opinions] Thoughts on Bristol?
Just wondering what people think of the name Bristol. Apparently it means Site of the Bridge and is a town in England. I think it has a cool sound. And while I respect the rights to everyone's own political opinion on this board, personally I am not a huge fan of Sarah Palin so the fact that this is her daughter's name is sort of a turn off because of the association. However, I still like the sound of it. Do you think that should be a factor? Do you think it's more masculine or feminine? Love it or hate it? Any good combo ideas? Any names that sounds similar to it that you know of? Like the name Crystal comes to mind but that's never been a fave of mine for some reason, but are there any others? Just wondering what people think of it. Thanks!

reminds me of britles on a brush.
Interesting town; beautiful situation; sad history as one of England's major slave ports. Not suitable for humans at all. Apart from everything else, what nns could you use? Bris? Bristly Bristol? No.
Meh, it's too yuppie for me. If I had to use it, it would definitely be on a boy.
I do love Sarah Palin and don't mind that association. However I do think it's strong enough currently that if I didn't like her I wouldn't use it. Personally I wouldn't use it because its the name of my husband's ex girlfriend. She's a really cool girl actually, and beautiful, just his ex.
fun fact: my cousin went to school with Bristol Palin and they were pregnant at the same time. Cousin did marry the father unlike that creep Levi.

I do like the name but I wouldn't use it BECAUSE of Sarah Palin. I would feel like I was devout Palinist or something lol. The same would go for one of my GP's, Miccaine (g). Before the rise of the "mickey" names, I loved this name. And then old John came around. Now, the name is of no use to me :(
I'm not a fan of Sarah Palin either. That said, when I first heard her daughter's name it became a guilty pleasure. I just think it's very pretty-and I def. prefer it on a girl. I would never use it mtself but I love it.
I live about an hour away from the city of Bristol, and it's not really a place I'd want to name my child after, lol.
I don't think that anyone who has ever been to Bristol would use the name. ;)
It seems to be popular with people who have never been to the UK.

Hey, what's wrong with Bristol?! It's such a beautiful city! OK, some parts...
Fantastic place to grow up (for me), obviously wouldn't use the name... that would be weird...

The fact that Bristol isn't a common name may result in people associating it with the Palins. That likely would be their primary frame of reference. I don't really see Bristol as masculine or feminine; it could work for both. Do I like it? Not really. I don't hate it either. I do think it's the best of the Palin kids' names.
It reminds me of a cigarette brand. The city of Bristol was a major participant in, and beneficiary of, the Atlantic slave trade, so I would never name a child in its honour!
