My Mother-in-law is named Bernadette. I think it is rather heavy, but not a bad name, however I'm not fond of the unfortunate nickname she uses, Bernie.
I like Bernadette as a middle name, paired with a first name that is lighter and more youthful for contrast such as:
Sylvie Bernadette - I like that both names are French
Lucy Bernadette
Nora Bernadette

I tend to think of -ette names as light feeling, actually. Also, one of my very best childhood friend's loved this name, so I sort of associate it with that light-heartedness as well. I do agree that Bernis is not very attractive; I'd probably go with Etta or Ettie or something like htat. Sylvie Bernadette is really cute, thanks.
