I know one Esther: Esther Maria, and she's a grandmother.
It's always sounded vaguely medical to me or at least scientific: all those jokes about the research chemist's twins, Polly and Esther. It's very much nicer than Hester, but not as good as Stella. For non-joke twins, using Esther and Stella as mns would be a nice, subtle link.
Have you read 'Scallagrigg"? (William Horwood) If I remember, the central character was Esther or had it as one of her names. Good book.
