Merryn sounds male to me, and Mairin = Maureen. To get the sound, I'd probably go with something like Maggie's suggestions below.

I like Merryn much better for that pronunciation. I'd pronounce Mairin like Maureen. I also like Maren... have you considered that?

My sister is using Maerin or Mayrin.

I prefer Merryn out of the two if your are pronouncing it 'Mare-in'.

I prefer Merryn for a boy, it was originally a male name (the Cornish saint was male) and I know a boy named this.

I think Mairin is a lot prettier, more feminine, and less trendy-looking than Merryn.
