Help[Opinions] How do you pronounce Llewelyn?
I watched the movie No Country For Old Men yesterday and one of the characters is called Llewelyn. In the movie the name is pronounced like lew-ELLEN. I've never heard the name pronounced before but I assumed it was pronounced like lew-eh-lin (similar to Madelyn which obviously isn't pronounced like mad-ELLEN).
How would you pronounce Llewelyn and do you know the correct pronunciation?

I had a kid with this as his last name. It's pronounce lew-ellen.

The correct pronunciation I've heard is very hard for non-Welsh people to say. I've read the correct pronunciation before, but I don't remember it for the life of me. Sorry.

Double 'L' is pronounced like a gutteral "hl" in Welsh. It's pronounced "hlew-ELL-en".
Non-Welsh people tend to just say "lew-ELL-en".
"LEW-ellen" is incorrect.

I've always said lou-ELLEN just based on how the Monty Python boys say it in that one skit about blacmanges (sp?).

That's how you say it in English - loo-ELL-in. In Welsh the double l makes a sound that isn't used in English. It's best described as "hl" I guess. So in Welsh it would be pronounced hloo-EL-in (or hloo-EHL-in if it's Llewellyn). In Welsh emphasis goes on the middle syllable.

Unless you're actually Welsh, the movie version you heard is what I've always heard too. I knew one once whose nickname was Lulu. But the Welsh double-L is more or less an HL ...
