Marie-Claire applies to NYU and is accepted, and quickly falls in love with the big, bustling city and the friendliness of the American people (in one of the most unfriendly cities, no doubt, which she thought said something about the French.) A fan of art since she was a tiny girl, Marie-Claire majors in art history and forms a friendship with an intelligent, witty guy in her History of Western Art I class. They soon fall deeply in love, and date all through college. After graduation, Marie-Claire and her fiance rent a small apartment in downtown Manhattan, and she quickly gets a job at a small gallery while her fiance goes to law school. Marie-Claire develops a keen interest in postmodern and street art, which was in its very infancy, and gets a lot of flak from her employers for her somewhat radical tastes. At 27, Marie-Claire becomes pregnant unexpectedly, and she and her fiance struggle with the question of whether or not to keep the pregnancy--they weren't sure they wanted children, but Marie-Claire decides ultimately that she is ready to be a mother. They get married in a small, intimate ceremony a few months later, and Marie-Claire gives birth to a son. For the next two years Marie-Claire rises through the ranks of the art world, eventually opening up her own gallery devoted to postmodern art, which receives rave reviews from a more accepting audience. In her mid-30s, Marie-Claire and her husband decide they would like to have another child, but they have trouble conceiving. After three years of trying and a few rounds of IVF, Marie-Claire discovers that she is pregnant with fraternal triplets--two girls and a boy. Marie-Claire's pregnancy is fraught with trauma and despite bed rest, the triplets are born 7 weeks early and spend weeks in the NICU. However, none are born with any lasting damage, and Marie-Claire vows that four is most definitely enough.
