Well, it's my son's name. Growing up and as a teenager, I never planned to name a son William and if you had told me then that I would some day, I'd have said you were crazy. It was a very very common name amongst my age group and older. I knew a thousand Bills. (Without exception, every William I knew was called Bill.) I never really thought about the sound of it, whether I liked that or didn't like it. It was just so common that I thought it one of the most boring names ever.
Then lo and behold, I meet a guy named William James III, who went by his middle name, and he told me he always wanted to name a son William James IV, and just couldn't see anything else, and I said okay, and now I have a son named William who is called Will.
So...the fact that it's now my son's name has made me like it more and I do really like Will. Short, simple, yet strong and masculine. I still think William is pretty boring, however, and I know that if it weren't for my husband wanting to continue a family tradition, I would never have named a son William.
