Which do you prefer and why?

We especially like the nn Alyssa (from Alyssandra)
or perhaps Alessa from Alessandra?

I prefer Alessandra; don't see the point of sticking random Ys into innocent names. Alessa sounds unconvincing; why not just name her Alyssa if that's what you're going to use?

Thank you! Alyssandra was listed as being the French form of Alexandra, but only on 1 site... I have found no proof on BTN . I agree, it looks cre8tive.

always or often? Some names are standard w/ ys... like if it's a -lynn(e) name. Linn would look strange to most and I don't think of Lynn(e) as trendy... It's more of an old standard. Also, if it's JUST Alyssa, the y seems more standard than an i, but I agre that in the case of Alessandra, it just looks like someone's trying to be trendy because the y doesn't even make the same sound as the e does... unless you have an accent that really throws off your vowels.

I mean't in this case, where the y simply looks ridiculous. I agree with you on Lynne and the same goes for Evelyn, Blythe and Cynthia etc etc. These names would certainly look atrocious with an I.

Alessandra is a gorgeous, classic name that will age beautifully.

Alyssandra is gimmicky and (I'm sorry) -- embarassing. Misspelling a name to force a nn from it is the tail wagging the dog.

Use nn Alyssa by all means. Alessandra, nn Alyssa, still works. Alessandra, nn Boogety-Boo, works for me as well. As strict as I am with formal names is as lax as I am with nns. Nns are the place for creativity and affection. Let your imagination run free. But formal names are the place for putting one's best foot forward to the world. Alessandra will always reflect well on your dd and you.

Alessandra, nn Alessa, would be my very favorite for you.

Alessandra is preferable since it's a real name. If you want an Alyssa, just call her Alyssa. It's a name on its own. Alyssandra just looks like people were trying too hard and tried to do something different w/ Alessandra or just were uneducated and didn't know how to spell it right.
