I haven't been on this site much since I had my little daughter (1 year and 4 days old). Now, I'm thinking of name possibilities for the next child. And if a girl, I'm considering Sheila
Please suggest some middle names! Our last name has 2 syllables, so I'd prefer something with 3 and feminine.
EDIT: I originally asked about Sile, but from the first few responses, and seeing the name more in print, I think I prefer the spelling, Sheila.
EDIT #2: I removed my sweet little daughter's lovely little name (honoring, by using the name my Dad wanted for me and my mother-in-law's name for the mn) under threat that it would be added to a bad name blog. ???

I prefer Síle - but then I am Irish and generally prefer Irish spellings over Anglicized ones.
Sheila is a good name - I like to see more of the untrendy Irish names in use. Have you considered Shelagh or Sheelagh?

Sheila is definitely pretty! It doesn't lend itself to shortening either, which is a plus. If it goes with your #1 Daughter's name, then it's definitely worth a place on the short list.
I can't see the point of using Sile unless you've got a very powerful Irish heritage.

I like Sheila, and Sile is alright. The only reason I'd be skittish to use it is because I think it is cliche Australian slang for a girl/woman. They put "Sheilas" and "Blokes" on the potty doors at Outback Steakhouse. ?? I still like the name Sheila though and I think it's usable.

I like Síle, but I agree that Sheila would be more easy for a child to deal with her entire life (unless you live in Ireland). I like Sheila. It's a pretty classic.
As for bullies, they will find a way to pick on a child's name no matter what it is (in my school the most notable example was Scott Pryce, who had a seemingly innocuous name, but was repeatedly called "Snot Lice")

I prefer Sile. It's a very interesting form of Cecilia. My favorite form is Cecile.

Maybe I'm a little late, but I VASTLY prefer Sile. Sheila looks horribly dated to me. And I'm a sucker for Irishness.

I need to make that clear, that some people would probably place Sile as a bad name. I am sorry for any confusion that has resulted. Just visit Bad Baby Names Hall of Shame, and you will find less disasterous names there, unfortunately. That should straighten things out.

Well, I didn't realize that you were criticizing Sile, as I thought you were criticizing my little daughter's name. Not that I care if a person doesn't care for my daughter's name, but I do care if it goes on a baby name blog and gets extra exposure which could result it in becoming more popular/common, because I want her name to remain unique.

So now I'm really curious as to what your dd's name is. I know, I know. It would defeat the purpose of taking it off the board. But it's like mentioning a song and saying, "Don't keep thinking about this song." :-/

Those "OMG QQ other people baby names suxx!" sites are really not taste-based, nor very cool. You have to ask, what kind of insecurely superior attitude motivates a person to compile such a list? What kind of wank is it supposed to be, to read them and groan? Sile is not "disastrous," any more than Caoimhe or, for heavensakes, than SEAN is. Instead of saying "some people would probably place Sile as a bad name" why don't you just come clean and say "MY reaction to it is that it looks silly because it doesn't look like Sheila, it looks to me like it rhymes with vile, and I would think it was a bad name if I met someone named that," or whatever you really feel. Own it! Don't try to project your reaction onto the general population as if you're somehow plugged in to what is tasteful. You don't need to. Your own personal opinion of the name is what you're supposed to post. We all recognize that your one opinion is most likely representative of more people, anyways.

A lot, actually. My name is used quite often for place names and everyone gets a big kick out of it. Drives me batty but I've learned to live with it. I even wore my Hoagie Haven t-shirt until it wore out.
My brother-in-law Damian was also teased a bit for his name but he, too, learned to take it in good humor.

I've been maliciously teased, yes.
But as it has been said before: Certain kids are going to be teased no matter what and others won't. It could get malicious at some point - I would have hated to be a Monica during the Monica Lewinksy debacle - but overall? No.
But there is teasing about names. Even if it's not malicious it can get tiring, believe me.

I definitely prefer Sheila, especially for a real kid. It would be unique for this generation, like you said, and Sile would be mispronounced and misspelled all the time (people have a hard time with my name, and that's annoying - I bet Sile is a lot worse!). The spelling also reminds me of bile, not a very pleasant association. Sheila is nice, though, and refreshing on a kid.

Sile is pretty. I like the spelling, but unless you're in an area where Irish names are familiar, there might be a lot of pronunciation issues. Sheila would be more straightforward even though I prefer Sile. I think you'd still be honoring her regardless of spelling.

I like the idea of being creative but Sile isn't very visually appealing...
Sheila just looks like it would be a nicer, more attractive person than Sile.
Not to mention that people would be constantly calling her "Syle" like style with out the "t"...

The more I see it, the more I think my preference is Sheila. I worry about my husband thinking it's an "old fashioned" name (he was very against Genevieve for this reason). He seemed to prefer Sile, when I mentioned it. But perhaps, I can persuade him. Yes, I think you're right, and it would be always mispronounced.

I was just thinking about what I wrote and wanting to change it. My opinion comes deeply from the fact that I work I healthcare and believe me, no accent marks or any of that make it into a person's name here. I would think it was just "syle" and I'm sure others would too. However, I could a;so be wrong....
I know a woman from India named Shiyla. I don't think it's in the BTN database but she said it was hindu. Pronounced the same way...
If the alternate spelling appealed to your husband and you wanted something that was still authentic, maybe Shiyla is an option??
