Apolline discovered she was pregnant shortly after the announcement of the queen's pregnancy. She and Queen Juliette spent many hours together during their pregnancies, sharing the highs and lows of being with child and preparing the nursery for the arrival of the royal infants.
When the land rush began, Prince Prosper went with his brother to lead the expedition. He has become very fond of his wife in the past year, and with her pregnancy, Prosper believes he may even be falling in love with Apolline. But he knows his duty, and his brother is still more dear to him than his burgeoning family. He leaves Apolline in the care of court physicians and the company of her sister-in-law and excitedly sets out on expedition. When the king falls ill and must return home, Prosper acts in his stead and wins the respect of many military men who thought the prince was simply an academic.
Apolline gave birth to a daughter about a month after the birth of the Crown Prince. Unfortunately, Princess Adélaïde is not as healthy an infant as her cousin, Crown Prince Dieudonne. The physicians attend to her constantly, hoping to improve her color and health. Apolline was crushed that her child was both weak and a girl. She is seeing physicians and medicine women to improve her fertility so her next child will be stronger and more likely to be a boy. She prays for her daughter's health to improve. Sadly, though she remains close to the Queen, her jealousy of the Queen's beauty, vitality, and healthy baby boy has increased and made her more reserved than usual.
When Prosper received word that his wife had given birth to a daughter, he was conflicted. He was glad that his wife and child had both survived, but disappointed in her health and gender as well. He was, however, thrilled to hear about the birth of his brother's son. He hopes that in time he will have healthy sons of his own. Miles away from his saddened wife, Prosper is fluorishing and full of hope.
Note - I did some research about the second son's of English monarchs and discovered that Prosper would be "Prince Prosper, the duke of Thealine" and his children would be "Prince/Princess NAME of Thealine."
