James and Rose grew up together on neighboring potato farms--their fathers were good friends and frequently traded with each other. When the Great Famine hit, both of their crops withered away into nothingness, and James' father urged him to leave Ireland and to go seek opportunities in America. However, James didn't want to leave without his beloved Rose. They hastily married in the parish church and not two weeks later set sail for America. They've landed in New York City with only a little money and the clothes on their backs.
