After the Lodz ghetto is sealed off in April, 1940, Solomon and Ziva, who live in Warsaw, are able to escape the country and head to the Netherlands, hoping that from there they can make Aliyah to Israel. Solomon's two brothers, Levi (15) and Aaron (9), escape with them, as do three of Ziva's siblings, Michael (15), Emmanuel (10), and Zipporah (12). Both sets of parents are still in Warsaw, with several younger siblings.
