About two years after Grandpa Rick's funeral, Ezra and Allie had started trying to have a baby. Things weren't going quite as expected though. It took a year before Allie conceived. During that time, when Allie was despairing that she would never get pregnant, Ezra went out to the local animal shelter and adopted a black kitten named Maisie. He brought the kitten home and gave it to his wife, who was delighted. Not long after that they discovered they were finally pregnant.
Allie gave birth to a daughter she and Ezra decided to call Charlotte Alice after a long, hard labor. It was Ezra's idea to give Charlotte her mother's name as a middle name in honoring.
