[Facts] pronunciation of Thalia
An earlier post on the opinions board brought this to mind. How is Thalia most commonly pronounced? What other pronunciations have you heard of?

And actually the pronunciation that I am most familiar with is "THAIL-yuh", with the first syllable rhyming with "tail" but definitely starting with the "th" sound found in "thin". This was how the name was pronounced on the old American television series "The Adventures of Dobie Gillis", which featured a character called Thalia Menninger.

I don't know about the common pronuciation but Encarta and the Oxford English Dictionary both give tha-LYE-ah as the pronunciation.http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/thalia.html - If you click on the speaker it gives a spoken pronunciation. It also gives two other pronunciations. Unfortunately the OED site I used is subscription only (I used my university's access)

Isn't it like tail-ya? I don't think you're supposed to pronounce the TH sound at the begining. Maybe it's tall-ya?Image hosted by Photobucket.com
