You should go there. My BIL did the genealogy for my dh's family. So when he and I went to Germany we were able to go to the small village his ancestors were from.
I notice with my nieces that they have next to no interest in English / Irish culture. Sad. I'd say two generations and it's gone, unless you actively promote it.
