I remember someone here saying that there was a gay bar called Mad Myrna's in Anchorage, AK. Could there be a better name for a gay bar? I don't think so. It made me like the name. :)

My great-aunt's name is Myrna, though she pronounces it MUR-nah. this is probably why I can't picture anyone young with this name.

I like Myrna and the alternate spelled Muirne as well. It's possible that was the woman's nickname as it means 'beloved' or something similar, right? Was her husband Irish?

I've never heard it pronounced MEER-nah, only MIR-nah. The MEER-nah pronunciation is prettier. I've never liked it pronounced MIR-nah, and it always makes me think of the Myrna Turner character on "The Odd Couple". Even MEER-nuh isn't great, though.

MEER-nah is nice, but I live in NY and everyone would say Merr-nuh... including me if I was reading it and not hearing it.

I think I like it. Mirna might be less likely to get "MUR-na", but I think it works as Myrna too.

I really like Myrna, which I pronounce "MUR-na."

I'm used to Myrna as "MUR-nuh," as in Myrna Loy the Old Hollywood actress. And because of her and William Powell in the "Thin Man" series, I've come to love the name.

"MEER-nuh?" Well, it doesn't offend my sensibilities, especially if the person is in Texas. Would I change the spelling? Only if there's a traditional Spanish (or other) name spelled Mirna. I would rather have a classic name pronounced differently than a classic name's spelling altered (if that makes sense).

ETA: Why lookee there. Mirna is in the database afterall, as a Slavic name. :-)
