After Friedrich’s birth, Eleonore was nervous for awhile. She knew that Friedrich’s parentage was known to Walter and to his sister, Princess Magdalena (and probably more…), and a part of her was waiting for Heinrich to realize as well. As those first few weeks after Friedrich’s birth were very trying due to this emotional stress, but as time went on and nothing happened, Eleonore allowed herself to relax. Heinrich left her alone for the most part and she filled her days with raising beautiful children. Heinrich was so happy to finally have a son that a part of Eleonore was almost sad for him that Friedrich wasn’t actually his… but then she’d she the disdain with which he treated Valeria and Amelie, daughters who were his own flesh and blood, and any pity she felt passed swiftly.
Friedrich was a few months old when a messenger arrived at the Bergfalk estate. The King had returned from his visit with his sister in France and was requesting an audience with Heinrich. Eleonore’s nerves returned ten-fold as she wondered over and over in her mind for what reason Walter would request an audience with Heinrich. After Friedrich’s birth, Eleonore had sent word to Walter that she had birthed his son, but she had not spoken nor heard from him since. She began to wonder if perhaps Walter intended on telling Heinrich the truth and taking his son from her to be raised as the prince his blood made him. Heinrich was furious at the summons, but refusing to go was not an option and, as stubborn and brutish as he could be, Heinrich knew that full well. A week later, Heinrich and Eleonore made their way to the palace with Valeria, Amelie and baby Friedrich. The elder girls were excited to be going to see their cousins, but Heinrich and Eleonore were silent for the whole trip, him out of anger and she because of nerves.
Upon their arrival, they were shown to the same suite in which Eleonore had stayed her last visit to the palace, the same suite in which she and Walter had conceived Friedrich. It did not take long for a guard to come for Heinrich and then Eleonore just had to sit and wait. She was very pleased however when Hedwig and her nieces and nephews came to see them and she and Hedwig were able to spend the time getting reacquainted. After a few hours, Heinrich returned in a rage and Hedwig quickly left and took her children, as well as Valeria and Amelie, with her. Heinrich proceeded to yell and bellow that the king had insisted that Heinrich’s position in his court be formalized and that the whole family would have to move to the palace. Naturally, this made him furious and he blamed Eleonore, assuming that the reason this request had been made was because Queen Hedwig had requested that her sister be moved closer. Eleonore was truly scared of the rage that Heinrich had flown into, but at the same time her heart soared that Walter had found a way to bring her family closer. Guards heard Heinrich’s rant and came to Eleonore’s rescue thankfully and he was removed from the suite to calm down. He stormed off and Eleonore did not doubt that he would be finding the closest tavern and she would be warding off his drunken advances later that night.
Not long after Heinrich’s departure, Walter came to see her. She collapsed into his arms, and as he held her she could only thank him over and over for doing what he had for her. Naturally, Walter wanted to see Friedrich and Eleonore happily spent the next few hours watching the man she truly loved bond with their son. Walter laughed that Friedrich would always be his ‘most favorite nephew’, but the love shining out of his eyes as he looked at him was obviously paternal. Walter also brought gifts for herself and Friedrich from France, and Eleonore could not help the tears that fell at the sweet gesture.
Once Eleonore, Heinrich and the children had been formally situated, Walter began finding reason’s to send Heinrich away, and Eleonore was left in peace from him at long last. Eleonore had never been so happy as she was then. Her children were being educated right along side their royal cousins and her daughter’s were flourishing into amazing young girls right before her eyes under the attention. Eleonore spent her days with her sister Hedwig, and the two were as close again as they had been as children. They did not speak of the relationship between Eleonore and Walter as that was a taboo subject, and neither wanted to lie to the other, so it was just not mentioned at all. Walter would visit Eleonore’s chambers as often as he was able without it being suspicious whilst Heinrich was away, and they allowed their love to blossom with the new closeness they were able to share. Eleonore knew that rumors must be rife as to their relationship, but she had grown very effective at dismissing them as publically insisting that Walter was her brother-in-law whom she was dear friends with, and nothing more. Over time however, no one could deny what was right in their faces, and that was that little Friedrich looked nothing like his father, but bore a striking resemblance to his uncle the King… No one ever pointed it out as that would not have been socially appropriate, and the claims would never be justified with the truth, but anyone who bothered to look could see the truth for themselves.
Heinrich’s drinking began to get worse and he was truly making a nuisance of himself, but Walter could only find so many reasons to send him away. He had never actually made an accusation of infidelity to Eleonore but they all suspected that that was the conclusion he’d come to. Not long after Friedrich’s third birthday, Eleonore discovered she was pregnant once more, a fact that she and Hedwig laughed about as Hedwig herself had also just realized she was pregnant and for the fourth time the two sisters would be pregnant together. Eleonore was of course happy to be expecting another child, but a part of her was also feeling very dirty about the situation as, given the timing, she could not say definitely whether this child was Heinrich’s or Walter’s. When she told Heinrich that she was with child, he flew into a rage and the accusations finally came as he asked her whether this child would be another of the King’s bastards, just as Friedrich was. Eleonore of course denied it all and he left angrily. She could do nothing but wait for him to return, but began to wonder if perhaps the time had come that she discuss with Walter the possibility of divorce from Heinrich… but the scandal that would cause, and the shame of it on her family made her push away the idea as quickly as she had it.
Heinrich never returned to her chamber that night as she had thought that he would and the next morning Walter informed her that he had sent him away on a job that would last indefinitely. Walter told Eleonore that Heinrich had tried to force himself on Hedwig the previous night in a drunken state and Eleonore was beyond appalled, and grateful that Walter had got rid of him for now at least. Eleonore begged Hedwig for forgiveness, which was naturally given, and Eleonore thanked the heavens for such a good and loving sister. The stress of it all took its toll on Hedwig however who had a very difficult pregnancy, especially when added to the fact that she’d lost a son awhile back as well… Eleonore however had a fairly complication free pregnancy and gave birth to a son only days after Hedwig gave birth to a daughter. Eleonore only had to look at her new son to know that, finally, she had given Heinrich a legitimate son as, even as a newborn, he looks just like Heinrich, and she wrote to him to tell him as such, hoping that this news would be enough to make Heinrich forget his anger for a time.
