After the rift that she suffered from Walter over his affair with Eleonore, Magdalena refused to go to court for nearly a year, only accepting visits from Joseph and his family and Hedwig and the royal children at her own estate. She saw Walter only when she could not avoid it, such as during the course of her ceremonial duties that required they meet. She focused on her own family. Katarina was rapidly growing into a beautiful little girl, quite bright, and soon after her argument with Walter, right after her fourth birthday, Magdalena employed the best tutors and instructors for her. She oversaw them herself, approved their lesson plans, and took a great hand in the entire process. For a full year she had only minimal contact with the brother she had been so close to.
It was Hedwig herself who convinced Magdalena to mend the rift with him. She knew about the affair, she said, and she had decided to submit to it. "It's better for everyone," she insisted. "I've accepted that my husband isn't in love with me, prefers my sister. It isn't something I can control, and if I make a fuss I'll lose them both. They're the most important people in the world to me, barring my children of course, and I can't lose them. I have Walter's affection and my sister's love and company, and I'm content. You've no reason to act so high and mighty when I accept it.
Magdalena was shocked that Hedwig had accepted it, but there was no lie in her face. She may not think it ideal, may not even like it, but she had bowed to what she saw as the inevitable and found a way to be happy. Magdalena was forced to realize that she had been too heavy-handed. She was forced to come to grips with the fact that not everyone was a lucky as she was; the eldest princess, she had been allowed freedoms most women weren't, and that perhaps she had even been selfish, marrying the man of her choosing instead of who would have been the best for Bial (granted, her marriage to Taddeo had brought them closer to Venice, as he was one of theri noblemen, but it was still not an important match as Adelheid's was.) Though it still pained her and she couldn't help a sense of disappointment about the whole matter, she too bowed to the inevitable. It was a bitter tonic to swallow; even when they were close, Adelheid had always said Magdalena would have to face the fact not everything was under her control. She was facing it now, and for Hedwig and her brother's sake, she apologized. Walter accepted, and she thought he seemed happy to welcome her back.
But even after their mending of their rift, Magdalena was not often at court. It was not because of Walter and Eleonore, but because starting just a few months later she began to suffer ill health. It started after a miscarriage, brought on by a tumble down the stairs. Never sick before in her life, Magdalena's health didn't recover afterwards and began to decline. No one was sure exactly what was wrong with her. For nearly a year doctors tried one thing and another on her, often bleeding her, but this tried and true cure only left her feeling worse and worse. Finally, after dismissing all the doctors, Taddeo himself reasoned that, since Magdalena had lost a great deal of weight, perhaps eating more would be the answer. Magdalena requested red meats, especially liver, which she had never liked before but tasted delicious to her at the time. She began to recover, and bloom returned to her lips and cheeks. Not long after this crisis, she fell ill again. This time it was a illness of the kidneys, and again there was a long convalescence and recovery period. All this kept Magdalena confined to her estates for a good two years, and afterwards she simply wanted to stay in the country and rest. It wasn't until Edmund was three that she truly began to feel like herself again.
It wasn't long after her health was restored that Magdalena once again became pregnant. She was not about to risk another year of illness, so she took it very easy during her pregnancy, and she was safely delivered of a third daughter just after Edmund turned four. They named her Margarete, which meant pearl and evoked the French word for daisy, because her skin was as soft and lustrous as these things, though darker. Anna is after a childhood friend of Magdalena's.
