With the opening of hostilities between France and Orlais, war seems imminent. But public opinion in Bial remains divided. On the one hand, Orlais has been a valuable ally for the last decade, while France never enjoyed much support among Bialans. On the other hand, Bial's beloved Princess Adelheid is the queen of France. What's more, France is undoubtedly more powerful than Orlais; to move against the French might prove to be a costly mistake.
Though King Walter has not yet decided whether to join Orlais and go to war with France, and is therefore officially neutral for the time being, he has discreetly been sending men and supplies to reinforce the Orlaisian troops. Among them is Diederich, recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel because of the influx of newly graduated officers from the military academy at Okala. Diederich is proud to serve his king and country, and in truth was very glad to hear of the outbreak of war. For as much as he cherished the time spent with his family, he was a military man at heart and had been itching to get back into combat. He was sent to the front lines on his first day of active duty and was nearly killed when some French troops raided the camp, but his men were well trained and fought back bravely. Though he misses his wife and children, he also missed the adrenaline and glory that comes with war.
Three months after Diederich left home for the French-Orlaisian border, Johanna gave birth to the couple's seventh child, a boy whom she named Gustaf. By this time, Mattias had joined Josef at Okala and had quickly risen to the top of his class, like his older brother. But while Josef displayed his military aptitude in physical activities, Mattias had more of a mind for strategy; his instructors said they had never seen a child so attuned to the subtleties of battlefield tactics. The boys sent home such glowing reviews of their time at Okala that their little sisters, Cecilia and Gisela, begged to join the army as well. Johanna just laughed and told them that war was not a woman's world. Instead, she said, they should strive to be like their sister Philippa, who was continuing her education with her governess and had quite a knack for speaking her mind. Three-year-old Wilhelm, whom the doctors had doubted would survive very long due to his premature arrival, had made a miraculous recovery. Though not as strong as other boys his age, he was still alive, which is all his parents could have hoped for.
