Mallory is kind of GP for me, I'm not sure why. I guess I'm secretly afraid it's borderline trendy or something. I like it, mostly because my BF said something about liking it once or twice.
Valerie makes me think of "valley girl" for some reason. I would never use it because I have had people mistakenly call me Valerie. (does it really sound that similar to Natalie?) As for using it despite a close family member having the same name.... well, I guess it woudl be a bit akward, but if you like the name a lot, then I'd say go for it.
