Though they officially hold titles as Duke and Duchess in Orlais, there are many whispers about Henri and Anne. As his unofficial surname implies, Henri is the bastard son of the late King Louis XVII of France by one of his mistresses, a girl of mixed French-Orlesian background. At the time, the Dauphin had not yet been born and so Louis kept his mistress in relative comfort and secrecy in a comfortable estate near Paris. He married her safely to a French nobleman, but when the child was born a boy, Louis quietly acknowledged the boy, much to Queen Adelaide's chagrin. Upon the birth of the Dauphin, Henri was promptly ignored, but still given a comfortable livelihood by his father. When the French-Orlesian war broke out, Henri moved with his family in Orlais, believing his father to be close to death and fearing retribution from Queen Adelaide and Prince Louis.
There he met and married Anne, a Orlesian duchess. There are many whispers about Anne as well, and it is widely accepted that she is the bastard daughter of King Leopold's father. There are even rumors that the former Queen and the king's mistress gave birth at the same time, to the late Princess Juliette and to Anne, and that the babes were switched, meaning that the woman who was sent to marry to the Bialan prince was really the bastard girl and that Anne is truly Princess Juliette. How much truth there is to these rumors remains unknown. Anne and Juliette looked much alike, with their fine fair hair and pale skin, and were childhood friends nearly inseparable until Juliette's marriage.
Anne is a lovely girl, with long golden hair, clear blue hairs, and a very clear pale complexion, as suits nobility. She enjoys her studies, as well as outdoor activities with her father and now, Henri. She is the only surviving child of an aging Orlesian duke and his late wife, who died in a terrible bout of plague along with the couple's son and infant daughter. As a result, the old duke keeps his daughter close, despite the rumors surrounding her parentage. Since she was a baby, he has affectionately called her Ninon, and has taken her out riding and hunting with him for most of her adolescence, spared no expense on the greatest tutors, and given her her every want. Not surprisingly, Anne is a bit of a tomboy because of all this. She has been seen around the estate wearing breeches and is a much more athletic and muscular girl than any of her maids and peers. It is quite amazing that she has remained so pale when she spends so much time outside.
When Henri came to Orlais, he stayed with his mother's family in Anne's family duchy. After several months there, he came before the Duke on family business. There he saw Anne and was immediately smitten by her beauty. He began to spend more and more time at the estate until one day he decided to reveal his nobility and propose marriage to Anne. She had quite enamored with him and she and her father gladly accepted. Their wedding ceremony was a rich and lavish affair, attended by many important people. Recently, the duke announced he was stepping down in favor his daughter and her husband.
With so much royal entanglement, who knows where their loyalties truly lie?
