Sad that a recent book overrides thousands of years of history. But I guess it could work on a man as well.

Heh, I remember picking up that book in sixth grade and being so disappointed the protagonist wasn't female. I was pretty miffed and it killed my interest, so I returned it. (This was during my brief "I only want to read books with strong female leads" phase).Though I now like books with protagonists of either gender, Artemis as a gender-bending name still grinds my gears.

That's why I've always thought of this more as a male name than female.
