I agree with you on Ulysses. I wonder why a good number of the "high and mighty" names make the Daily Telegraph BAs and not the more plain-sounding ones.

It's because the only people who pay for birth announcements in national papers are really posh people. Really it's an outdated concept; nowadays you just phone or email or something with people who want to know rather than telling everyone in the country. I think it tends to be the "posh" families who continue traditions like this, and they also tend to be the ones who would choose pretentious or really long names.

I enjoy looking at the BAs in that paper - many of the parents seem to vie with each other in choosing the most pretentious names.
Last week I noticed a girl with five names (surname made six) in the BAs - wish I could remember them!
