In the Kingdom of Nighlin
Octavia hadn't wanted more children after her first birth, but the fact was that she was queen and, as the dowager queen insisted, it was her duty to produce more fine children and, in turn, eventually an heir to the Nighlin thrown. In private, Theodosia made perfectly clear how lucky Octavia was to have become queen; if it hadn't been for the fact that Vincent had stamped his little feet, Theodosia would have happily seen Octavia thrown out on her rear end, never to be seen again. That hadn't been the case, but the dowager made it perfectly clear that she would have no qualms with souring Vincent against his bride if the new queen didn't toe the line. Octavia was far from distraught; in fact, she was furious, and frequently wondered what she'd signed herself up for. Nonetheless, King Vincent was more sympathetic to his wife's request and they quietly decided not to have any more children for a while.
Meanwhile, Princess Genoveva was growing up fast, and even though she would never inherit the thrown, or perhaps because of this fact, was frequently spoiled. She was her mother's daughter, though, and seemed fated to grow into a tomboy. This was not a good thing, the king and queen were told, and they shouldn't really shrug it off. Octavia thought that Nighlin should be more progressive towards women's places in society if it was going to progress like Vincent wanted it to. Nighlin was still a very backwards kingdom, as Octavia often observed as courtiers and advisers asked probing questions about her lack of pregnancy. She knew they would just love it if Vincent's affections towards his queen had failed, or she secretly hated him, or if, best of all, they were simply unable to have any more children.
She did fall pregnant in the end, unplanned and sooner than she would have wanted. It was a tough pregnancy and when she gave birth to twins, it was evident why. They named the first, a daughter, Alexandrina after the dowager queen. Octavia had been firm that if they had to name their child after the woman she had already labelled a she-devil, then it wouldn't be as Theodosia. Another nod to the dowager queen was the middle name Ellen - so close to the name Eleanor the dowager herself bore. The prince was named Roland, a dashing type of name, neither modern nor archaic. His middle names referred back to ancient rulers of Nighlin - King Otokar, King Archelaus - and Bernard was Theodosia's suggestion. Octavia didn't like Bernard as a name, but was getting the strange, sinking feeling that until the she-devil was dead and buried, she'd better toe the line.
The birth of twins was seen as inauspicious. How would that work out? Technically Roland was the younger, and therefore would become King Roland in due time; but what if the people wanted a Queen Alexandrina of Nighlin instead? There had been civil war over less pressing matters. The king's advisers advised that another child was in order - a clear heir, one who wouldn't be contested for the thrown against. Octavia wanted to shout that she wasn't a baby breeding machine, but knew she'd be ignored; only the occasional filthy look was thrown her way, as if she'd planned the whole thing, as if having twins had been some evil plan of hers to threaten the Valdimere thrown. The king and queen were unimpressed, but surrounded by pushing advisers and the looming dowager shadow, there was little they could do but smile and nod.
