After the difficult birth of Alexandra and the weak health that Susanna continued to suffer, the physicians ordered her to have no more children. She and Bran were both perfectly fine with this, as they loved their four little ones and really were content with them. And though Susanna adored her children, she had had a difficult time balancing ruling her kingdom and being mother to an infant. Their families were fine with it as well, as Quinn and Rose and Walter and Alexandra were all lovely and delightful children. Susanna and Bran enjoyed watching their children grow up. Quinn grew into a serious and dependable boy, and by the age of seven it was clear he was very good at taking care of the younger children. Susanna and Bran both agreed he would make a great father one day, and were glad their eldest was someone their younger ones could depend on and look up to. Rose and Walter were quite a pair, looking totally opposite but with very similar personalities. Both are slightly wild; not disobedient, but prone to running off and tree climbing and generally running around and getting underfoot. But both are also very sweet and love to be kissed and cuddled. The main difference is that Rose had a natural insatiable curiosity, and by the time she could talk she asked thousands of questions. She learned to read a full year younger than the other children because she wanted books read to her so much, and when she started formal lessons she blossomed under the best tutors in the kingdom. Walter, though intelligent, just isn't the sort of person who wants to know everything the way his twin sister does. Though some get annoyed, Susanna and Bran loved this tendency in their daughter when it began to show itself and encouraged it as much as possible. Little Alexandra, their heir, showed right from the beginning the makings of a good queen. Observant, quiet, determined, and very compassionate, even as a toddler, Susanna and Bran often discussed the type of queen she would be, and both agreed she would be great. It didn't hurt that, like Rose, she looked almost exactly like her mother. Susanna has been a popular ruler, with the people and advisors, and looking like a popular monarch never hurt the image of a new one.
The Royal Advisors were the only ones not happy with the arrangement. Four heirs, especially with two of them twins, was not considered a stable enough arrangement. Suppose something happened to Alexandra before she took the throne or before she had children? The advisors triedto convince the queen to have at least one other child, just for the sake of stability, and even tried to bribe the physicians to tell the queen one more was safe a few years after Alexandra's birth. But the physicians were adamant that another delivery would almost certainly kill the young queen. Susanna firmly stated that she would not have more children, and took the preventative potionsn and tonics regularly in front of the Advisors, just to remind them she would not be coerced.
But fate did what the advisors couldn't. Though she took her preventatives regularly and she and Bran did everything known to man to prevent it, when Alexandra was four she found herself pregnant again. But this time Susanna ignores the signs, confident that she cannot be pregnant, until her belly starts to grow. The physicians are horrified. By this point no potions or procedures can end the pregnancy without great risk to the queen. The only thing to do is order strict bedrest for the queen and pray that she is strong enough after five years to survive. Susanna, terrified but knowing she must provide for the worst, sets up an Act of Regency that sets Bran as sole regent for the heir to the throne until the child reaches the age of majority. She prepares her children, even five-year-old Alexandra, for the reality that she will probably not survive delivering their brother or sister. She writes a will, and writes letters for all of her family members to be delivered in case of her death. Lengthy letters are written for Bran and each of the children. Susanna herself had to come to terms with the fact that she would probably die. And she was only twenty-seven. The least-accepting of all of this was Bran. He was certain that the Advisors had something to do with it, and anger bloomed into outright hatred. He launched a vendetta to have them all removed, and though Susanna didn't believe his theory that one of them had switched her potion, she actucally did replace some of them.
The labor started early, and the physicians were not able to stop it. Within minutes after delivering a little prince, the queen hemorrhaged. She bled out quickly, with only enough time to look at her son before her heart simply didn't have blood to pump any longer. Bran, who was with her, was inconsolable. The physicians, certain that there was still another child left in the womb, cut the queen and pulled out not one, but two little princesses. They pulled them out at exactly the same time, inadvertantly creating exactly the crisis that the advisors had feared.
Bran had to be torn away from his wife. The physicians told him that he should go to his children and that he shouldn't be there while they made her presentable for last goodbyes. So Bran went to the nursury, where all of his children were already crying in fear. His face told them the worst, and together they wept. In the middle of this, three physicians came, each bearing a baby. None weighed more than four and a half pounds. They were small and frail, but the physicians thought them likely to live. Everyone waited to see what the King would do, slightly afraid. But one by one he walked over to the babies, kissed their heads, and gave them their names. Gideon, Julianna, and Katarina. Names Susanna had picked out. Katarina, pulled out perhaps a second later than Julianna, he declared Susanna's heir. All, he said, looked remarkably like their mother, his beloved wife. The entire family settled around these infants and loved them fiercely at once, even little Alexandra seeing herself as their protectors.
The advisors were horrified when they heard what had happened, all feeling somewhat responsible for now creating this crisis of succession they were now in, if not for the queen's death. Katarina was less than two seconds younger than Julianna, impossible to truly call her the youngest child. They could not fathom what they were goingto do, and now they hadthe king's wrath against them. The first day he met with them, one week after the queen's death, Bran stood before them and summarily dismissed them all. He had arranged a new board of advisors to assist him until Katarina came of age, and he ruled in her name and the name of the late beloved Queen Susanna. The public mourning was great, but it was nothing to the private mouring of Susanna and Bran's family. Everyone had loved her, and many did not have dry eyes for days. Bran ordered a grand funeral and a week of public mourning.
The first month of deep mourning had hardly ended before another disaster struck. An attack was launched on the northern borders by the kingdom of Yaarsa. Yaarsa is a traditional enemy, but they have had a tenuous peace for the last twelve years. Now they have launched what appears to be a full-scale invasion. Bran is forced to contend with them, trying to keep them from truly breaking the borders. But the royal army is not large enough, and conscription is against the traditions of Irnys. The only hope the new Royal Advisors see is for Bran, King Joseph as he is officially known, to make a deal with a potential ally. But the price of cooperation is one that shocks Bran--they want him to promise marriage to one of their most prominant ladies!
