Getting custody of his niece Marie-Grace was difficult for Sam. She had been born in France only a few weeks before her parents, Sam's estranged brother and wife, died in a car accident there. From then on, it was all legal and international hoops to jump through in order to gain custody from the French government. A few months later, however, he was able to board a plane from Paris to his home in New York. He's been doing his best to raise her as well as his brother would have wanted (they didn't always see eye-to-eye), but with a full-time job he's needed to secure a part-time nanny (who speaks French, so Marie-Grace has a little bit of her mother with her). And as for dating and social life, being a new single dad has sort of gone out the window.
