[Opinions] Ally
I used to strongly dislike Alison and Ally but lately they've been growing on me a lot. I still dislike Allison but Alison has grown on me and I find it quite pretty. I really love Ally because I know a super nice girl named this. I dislike Alli and Allie however. Ali looks cute to me, too but would probably be to easily confused with the common guys name Ali.So what do you think of Ally? How many girls named Ally, Allie, Alli etc do you know and what are their full names? How old are they? Do you think it's a dated nickname?I kind of have the same issue with Penny. I love Ally but nothing it could be short for. I mean I like Alison but not enough to use and the thought of people spelling it Allison isn't appealing (no offense to the Allisons, I just don't like the spelling). I like Alexandria but also not enough to use.Would Ally work on its own? Do you find Ally common? How would you spell it? What do you think of Alison? I was surprised to see Allison is common for babies, always seemed to me it was a 70s name (maybe 80s). Opinions?

Ally McBeal. I never saw the show, but that's the only place I've seen that spelling of Ally. And I think I'd probably guess at 'Allyson' if asked for a full name for it.In the UK Alison is the usual spelling (Allison, to me, is a last name). I like it; it's simple, pretty and not common on babies atm. I know heaps of Alisons, ranging from 20 to 50-ish,and the ones who shorten it all go by Ali- it's pretty common here. I also know an Alistair who is Ali, and an Alexandra who is Aly.

Actually I know an Allie and an Ally and both of their full names are Alexandra!

I have been thinking about Ally lately too! I like Ally and Allie equally but the other two spelling I don't like. It seems like it has to be a nickname for something but not necessarily Alison.... i.e. Alexandra, Alice, Alicia. I know two Ally's in their late 20's (no idea what they're short for) and of course there's Ally McBeal.

I know two girls named Allie. One is short for Allegra and one is short for Alexandra. Oh, and I also know an Alexandra "Ali". They're all around 20 or 21.I don't much care for the spelling Ally, as it reminds me of the word alley. I really like Allie as a nickname, though, and don't think it's dated in any spelling. It's definitely way too cutesy as a given name. My favorite full names are Alexandra, Allegra, Alina, Alexandrine, and Alice.I like Alison a lot, but don't care for Allison at all.

I think it can work on its own. If Ellie can, why not Ally/Allie? I generally don't mind nicknames as full names.I prefer Allie to Ally. Ally looks a bit odd to me, and I think of the word "ally."I can think of four people named Allie, but I'm pretty sure I've met more than that. Two were named Alexis and Allison. I don't know about the other two, though. It's possible that at least one was just Allie. Alexis "Allie" is in her early twenties, Allison is in her mid twenties, one Allie is in her mid twenties, and the other one is probably in her fifties or perhaps late forties. Allison may have spelled her nickname Alli, but I can't remember. I knew her a long time ago, and she usually wrote her name down as Allison.I like Allison. Alison is decent, but I've always preferred Allison.I don't find Ally/Allie too dated.

I love Alison but have never really been fond of Ally. I've personally known at LEAST 2 (in their 20s) but have heard of lots more. Ally could also be a NN for Allegra, Alice, Alina, Aleta / Alida, Alannah, Alora...The 2 Allys I know are named Alecia (or some variant spelling)

My sister's nameMy sister is Ali and I know others who go by Ali/Ally/Allie too.- A 19 year old named Alexandrea I know goes by Ali. Her parents picked the nickname because it was easy for her to learn to spell when she was little. - My sister is 16 years old and her name is Ali, just Ali. My parent's originially were going to name her Alison but when she was born my grandma said she was going to nickname her Ali and my parents thought that was so cute that they would just name her that. A lot of people ask what it is short for and normally they assume Alison or Alice but we just say no, just Ali and it isn't a big deal. Many times it is mispelled though. Never has anyone ever confused her name with the guys name Ali. I've never met an guy Ali so the name is so feminine to me.- I know a girl around 9 or 10 that is called Ally. I think that is how they spell it. I don't know her well and I don't know what it is short for but I want to say Alexandra.- I girl that lives around the corner is named Alexis and is occassionally called Ally/Allie/Ali - not sure how to spell it as it is mostly just spoken, written is usually Alexis. - My sister has a friend whose sister named Alison and is called Ali. She's around 12.So I definitely can see it as a full name. I don't think it will be confused with the male Ali. I don't think it is dated nickname as everyone I know is under 20. While I listed many Ali/Allie/Allys I don't consider it common at all as everyone has a different spelling or full name and some of these girls are rarely called by the nickname.

Yeah I imagine Ali would be a lot easier to spell than Alexandrea. I like Alexandria a lot but took it off my list because a) people always thought it was Alexandra when they gave it a quick look, b) people would ALWAYS call her by a nickname anyway and c) I hate most nicknames you can get from it except for Ally and Ali.Alice nn Ali is a good idea as well. Thanks for your answer :)

Yeah, I think it'd work on its own. Ellie does, Emmy does. Why not Ally.
I think Penny stands alone fine, too. I like Penny. I'm just-okay with Ally.My thoughts on Ally:It reminds me of Ally McBeal.
I tend to read it as "AL-lye" first - someone you have an alliance with? I think that's why Allie might be a more common spelling. I think Alison is a great name, and since it hasn't fallen out of fashion rapidly, it's probably about like Bridget in terms of being dated. I mean, not dated but becoming more classicky. Similar to Jacqueline too.

Alice or Alyssa? I like Ally as a nickname, this spelling only. I know 1 Alison nn Ally she's 22

I like Alison. I know a lot of Allys, Allies, Alis, etc. Their names are forms of Allison/Allyson, Alyssa (this one is an Aly), and Alexandra.
I like the look of Ali best, but does look exactly like the boys name. I don't like Alli or Allie; they look too preppy IMO. Honestly Ally looks sort of preppy too, but it isn't as bad as the ones wih "ie" and "lli". I think I like Aly too. Also Ally looks like the word ally.
I love Alexandria :P Other ideas could be... Allessandra? Allana? Meh. I see what you mean... maybe it's best to go with a one-l spelling? Or just have a kid named Alison "AL-ee" and see how she wants to spell it?

The way I see it, Ally could be short for any Al- name. I don't think it's substantial enough on it's own to make a good full name. But there's gotta be *something* from the Al- names that you like, no?
Alana
Alaina
Alanis
Alba
Albina
Alice
Alexis
Alexa
Alessandra
Alexandria
Alida
Alina
Alessa
Alia
Alyssa
Alicia
Althea
Nothing?I know three Alis (all Alisons). One is 17 and the other two are in their 30s.

I do like Alexandria, Alice, Alana and Alicia but not enough to use them. So I'm wondering if I should put something I just like on her birth certificate just because it's more formal or Ally which I love. Hmmmm.

I'm not one for different spelling of name that sounds exactly the same (Allison v Alison). I also don't believe in giving a nickname to a person when an actual name could be shortened whenever and then revert (It's easy to go from Elizabeth to Liz to Beth and back to Elizabeth. It's hard to go from Ally to Allison).I personally like the name Allison, and compare it to names like Briana. Sporty yet feminine, a tiny bit dated but too much, and easy to shorten and give nicknames for.

Alison is the original which is also why I like it better. And I wouldn't want her to go back to Alison because even though I like it, I don't like it enough to use :/ Thanks for answering!

Oh, I guess I never knew that. I always thought Allison was the original. I know way more Allisons then Alisons. And I guess on the nickname thing... I was give a very short first name (Eva). It's short and cute but I wish my parents would have named me Evangeline so I could have been Eva or Angel or Lina or some other nickname. I just think that longer is better, especially when you're planning on using the nickname form anyway. It's personal though, not always applicable to everyone else.
