I think it's sleazy and generally without charm. :-/ Reg sounds just as unappealing to me, I'm sorry to say.
In my mother's dorkier moments she still says "pull a Reggie" if she wants you to take a right turn while driving (as opposed to hang a Louie, which would be left).
