I've never met one or seen it used. My only association is with Dr Zhivago, and there I had always assumed it had a double -ss-: Larissa. Perhaps I was just confused by names like Melissa, or there might be an issue with Russian pronunciation or intonation?
I prefer Laura to Lara, but I don't mind Lara at all. Larisa probably needs a mn that makes a statement - either something firmly Russian like Feodora or something firmly English like Clare or something with a foot in both camps, like Stacey instead of Anastasia.
