[Opinions] WDYTO Rupert?
What do you of the name Rupert (Eng. pron.)?
Do you know / have you met anyone with this name?
What would you pair this with, using Rupert as the FN?I used to dislike the name Rupert, but it is growing on me - so much so that it made my top 10 for boys this month. I'm curious as to what you'd pair it with.

It sounds nice enough, but always makes me think of the bear... My other association of it is the city of Prince Rupert, B.C. However, neither of those are bad associations, so it's worth keeping on the maybe list.

I like it, although I do think of Rupert the bear. I think Rupert George or Rupert Miles are handsome.

I like it, it's my brother's name - and one of my nephew's middle names, after my bro. I've met several others, too. I couldn't use it because it would be way too confusing, but these sound good to me:Rupert James
Rupert Oliver
Rupert Barnaby
Rupert Morgan
Rupert Edward
Rupert Thomas
Rupert Fraser
Rupert Nicholas
Rupert Charles
Rupert George
Rupert Frederick
Rupert Gabriel
Rupert Aran

Your parents must be snobs. Why is Rupert so popular in England? I don't get it. It's such a snob name.British people are so judgmental when it comes to names. British people think it's terrible to name your kid Courtney, Donna, Jordan, or Kevin since "only chavs have those names", but it's wonderful to name your kid Rupert, Horatio, Euphrosyne, Hero, or Cressida. This is real life, not some fantasy world.

Uhh... you do realise that, by saying that, you're indicating that the only British people with a valid opinion are the middle and upwards classes who are using names like Rupert? You are explicitly excluding "chavs" (and working-class Britons in general) from your "British" voice.A bit classist, no?

I don't like it. It sonnds kind of stuck-up and overly British in a bad way (no offense to any British users).

I love Rupert I think it's amazing. I have never met one and the only associations I have are Rupert Grint and Rupert the Bear.

It's cartoonish to me. A cartoon Englishman with his monocle and his brandy glass, all wrapped up in tweed and smoking a pipe.I have never met a Rupert, not even a dog. The only Rupert I know about besides Rupert Murdoch is, years ago the local radio station ran commercials for a used-car parts yard and later a beachfront restaurant, and the pitchman was this guy doing a goofy redneck impersonation and calling himself Rupert. So I also think of it as a hillbilly cartoonish name.

I agree with this image of Rupert. It sounds like one is trying to be overly British, to the point of almost being comical. Like a caricature or something.

I like Rupert, but not sure about the nn's of Rupe and Pert. Which tends to bring me to Rudolf instead because I do like the nn Rudy. Are there commonly acknowledged nn's for Rupert I haven't heard of or do families make up ones that don't relate or do families tend to use the full name (which is a wee bit stuffy)?

If I ever named a child Rupert he would go by that - no NNs (I don't like those either!). I don't think there are any commonly acknowledged NNs.

I like it but I always think of Rupert Grint (played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies) and Stewie Griffin's teddy bear on Family Guy.

I never make those associations. I do, however, occasionally think of Rupert Bear, some comic strip that led to books and a television series.

Rupert is my all-time favourite name: if I had my way, I would definitely name my future son this. However, since many seem to think the name is too old-fashioned or snobby, I think the chance is considerable that my future partner will think so, too. As a result, I will probably end up making a compromise and putting Rupert in the middle name spot. *sigh*The combo that I have always had in mind is Rupert Wilhelm (since I am of German heritage), but lately I have started to like Rupert Wolfram as well.Other combo's that I can think of (for the sake of this thread) are:Rupert Casimir
Rupert Leopold
Rupert Reuel
Rupert Sebastian
