[Facts] British pronunciation of Georgia?
In Australia and the USA the i isn't sounded but I'm curious as to whether the i is sounded in the UK.
The Oxford Popular Dictionary of Babies' Names (Hanks & Hodges, pub. 1986)implies that the i in -ia is pronounced in this name, because the pronunciation key is the same as Julia etc.
I'm baffled!

I think that phonetically the g+i (and g+e) work together to make a j sound. So the i (and the e) isn't sounded as a separate vowel, but it still earns its keep by modifying the consonant.
Your Julia reference makes totally no sense at all! Oxford must have been smoking its learned socks ...

Interesting observation re g+i - thanks!
I've never heard it sounded here either. That would sound very odd!
Thanks!
